For those of you who didn't read my other discussion some of my neighbor's dogs got out and killed about 8 of our cats. They got out again today and were destroying our yard and probably got a hold of another cat. I called the sherrif and he came out here to pick them up. Then my neighbor called and threatened to make all of our cats disappear. I didn't think that the sheriff could tell them who called and complained but I know if my cats do start disappearing there will be a major lawsuit. They should have listened the first time when I told them that their dogs were out killing our cats. It's not my fault that they didn't fix the fence. What are your thoughts on this? Should I do anything further since they threatened the lives of our cats?

Do not call the Police. They will do nothing for you except log it.
Please call your local Animal Control Office immediately.
Dogs that come into your yard are not contained properly, they have killed your pets, and therefore are a menace to the neighborhood. Report their owner's telephone call to you too. Cruelty like this is punishable by arrest, jail time, fines, and the confiscation of the dogs in question.
Don't wait!
Call Animal Control Right Now!

I did call animal control. See I live out of city limits so the sheriff has to come and as far as I've heard they are coming out here to take them away for good and give the owners a nice hefty fine. I wasn't the only one that called apparently. I hope they do get something at least what they deserve for taking the lives of our cats.

Don't worry they took their dogs away and I have proof that she called and threatened me on my phone so if something happens I will call the police and have them deal with it and I will be hiring a lawyer to take care of them for good too. Oh and she tried to convince me that there is a leash law for cats. That's a laugh. Cats aren't dangerous at all so I don't see how she can get them taken away.

Oh my gosh Giggles. I definitely feel for you on this. We have many stray dogs and cats that run around our area and there is no control over it at all. I have had wild cats and stary dogs that have tore off my screens off of my doors. I have called the police to do something about it but they tell me there is nothing they can do. I would definitely file a police report and state to them what your neghbor said. Your neighbor should not let their dogs out to run loose like that anyway and if the fence is broke, they should fix it, period. Good luck with it and I sure hope nothing else happens to your cats. Grrrrrrr.

Thank you!! I hope nothing more happens to my cats either. Ok things just changed as I was writing this reply. The sheriff just stopped by and told me he can't do anything about those dogs because they aren't out anymore. He told me I have to get proof that they attacked and killed my cats so apparently I have to wait until next time they attack my cats and take a bunch of pictures. This is ridiculous. I'm too mad to write anymore.

If they ave made a threat possibly you should consider taking out an order of protection against them. They have no right to threaten you and make you feel uncomfortable in your own home, on your own property. I would also do my homework and try to dig up as much dirt as you can on them. They probably have had been reported in the past for their dogs and if you go to court they will ask if there is a history of this activity and if you have some proof then it will help your case alot. Also check to see if they were ever reported to your local ASPCA. TAKE PHOTOS when possible of them running free form their home and a video if possible. You need evidence if this ever goes into court. Any and all damages on your property should be photographed. Try to get pictures of the dogs loose in your neighborhood or when they come on your property. If you know any other neighbors who have had problems with these same dogs or owners, try and get a signed notorized letter from them. If any of their dogs have bit someone before, this is the kind of information you want to get proof of. How many dogs do they have and what kind are they? How many cats do you presently have left? You should NOT have to go through all these changes. Did you take pictures of the cats that they did kill already? I know you might not want to but it is necessary, a police report is one thing but photos are the best thing to show the court.

I didn't even think about any of that but that is definently a good idea. I'll have to see what my dad did with them so I can take a picture. I don't think the dogs will be getting loose anymore because my neighbor said that they were taking them away. I'll go around and see what the neighbors have to say about it.

YES! Tell SOMEONE! That is HORRIBLE. How can someone be SO HEARTLESS? You loose EIGHT of your beloved cats and they act like its NO BIG DEAL? Man someone has no heart seriously. I'd tell the cops for sure especially with a threat like that. You wouldnt make it up. I'm sorry for you about this. I will keep this in prayer for you. Okay. Keep us updated :(( Sorry again this is a horrible thing! :((

Yes I read that discussion and I still remember. This is so dreadful. I really cannot imagine such cruel people can exist. You must get a restriction order or something. Or capture those dogs somehow.

Well Apparently Animal Control picked them up and that's why she called and threatened our cats. I don't think that they will actually do anything though and if they do we'll know it's them and we have proof.

It is time to bring the cats in until things settle down. Also, call the sheriff and report what the neighbors said. I would also call the humane society and report these people since your animals were killed and there are laws to cover this. I am so sorry you are having to deal with nasty people like that! Take care and keep us informed. Good luck!

Its so easy to keep blaming people, however why dont we look at the other side of the story, dont feel bad but if you bought the cats then dont you think you should have thought of all safety measures to protect them?
Why are you waiting for your neighbour to build or mend this/her fence why dont you build a fence around your compound?
By doing this you will not only safe guard your property but also the cats and overall increase security for yourself and family.
Hope this helps and no one sues me for being so direct with my opinion's.
Cheers!

You're just giving your opinion so no one is going to sue you at least not me. I like your advice it's just not very easy to keep cats in a fence or in a house at least not ours. We rescued them from the wild so they are pretty much outdoor cats but we love them just the same. It would increase my family's and propety's safety though you are right about that. I wish it was that easy though. We are thinking about it we just have to think of a way to still have a driveway to easily get in and out of without going through a fence.

I did read your previous post about this. Those dogs where clearly a menace not only to your cats, but to any child that they might have encountered. It was bad enough that 8 of your cats where killed, it would have been much worse if a child had bees mauled and killed by them.

It is totally wrong what they are doing and yes you should do all that you can.....BUT just be careful because you have to live there and it could get quite ugly these neighbourhood disputes. But on the otherhand, they should not get away with it.

I agree that it is time to bring the cats inside. We had three of our cats go missing when I was living with my parents. We believe that someone was trapping or killing our kitties, but didn't know who or why, so when we adopted new kitties we brought them inside. And the kitty I have now is strictly an inside cat. Its horrible that we have to deny them the outdoors, but she is safer this way.
I also agree that you should document this. You can probably start a civil lawsuit and sue for damages to your property (which I would assume would include the cats) caused by the dogs. If you have proof of the dogs causing the damage. It could be expensive, but it might be worth it to you to make them pay for what you lost.
And as far as not upsetting your neighbors, what kind of neighbors are they if they let their dogs destroy your property and then they threaten you verbally. Good Luck to you and I am sorry about the loss of your precious kitties.

Thank you and I really do wish I could keep my cats in. I have seven cats left alive and they are very sly and fast cats as soon as you open that door there goes another blur out that door. We tryed to keep them in for a couple of days but had to give up. I'm sorry about your old cats. I wouldn't be very happy.

I remember reading that discussion and it made me so sad. I'm glad that you called the sheriff and had him come pick the dog up.
Your neighbor is being ridiculously childish over this, but I have a feeling that the sheriff didn't tell him who complained. I think your neighbor guessed - heck after the trouble with your cats it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.
Now that they've made threats against the rest of your cats, I would call the Sheriff again, and just tell him that they've been making threats towards the rest of your cats, and is there anything he can do to stop this threatening behavior?
You should not have to live fearing for the rest of your cats lives just because your neighbor refuses to control his dog.

Thank You!! Unfortunately the sheriff changed his mind and is not going to take the dogs away. I bet they bribbed him or aomething because that is rediculous and I told him that if a little child or even an adult gets attacked by these dogs that it is soley on his head. It looks like until I can get pictures of them destroying our property or killing a cat they won't do anything about it. This is getting way too stressful. At least he gave us permission to take care of the dogs ourselves the next time they come on our property.

A situation, very similar to yours, was discussed on The Dr Phil Show. Judge Judy has also tackled your same problem. Yes. You can start a lawsuit, It could turn ugly and it will cost you downtime, not to mention some money. I find it a little dubious that a dog can catch a cat.I find cats are very fast to escape up to fences or other high places. Mine do. Did you actually see the dogs hurt he cats? This is important} If the neighbors did not fix the fence, why didn't you make permenate or temporary repairs? It would have taken 5 minutes of your time and saved cats lives. I don;t recall how the situation was solved on Dr Phil show; but I think it was amiacle. Or they all went for anger management sessions. Ps:I think it would be an unhappy thing to have a grudge against a neighbor. A neighbor who obviously lives right next door

I believe some of the cats in question were only kittens so I find it very reasonable to believe the dogs caught and killed the kittens and perhaps the mother who was trying to defend them. As my husband found out first hand and mother cat will defend her kittens.

No they don't live right next door and how in the world am I suppose to make any kind of repairs to their fence. Am I suppose to let their dogs maul me? If they didn't I'm sure my neighbor wouldn't of been very happy with me being on her property. Dogs are just as fast as cats and these dogs are very big and very fast and if you would have actually read the whole discussion including the one preceding this one you would have known that most of the cats were newborn kittens. How are they suppose to get away. It sounds like you don't have all of your facts so go back and read again then I would be happy to hear your suggestion.

I feel sorry for you that you have lost 8 + cats due to this but.. I have a question for you.. What are your cats doing loose? It's a dog's nature to chase a cat and sometimes kill it by playing. If you want to do anything to future keep your cats from dying, properly care for them inside your home where they can't be harmed by anything or anyone. I hope it doesn't come off to strong. I am a huge animal lover and don't like seeing animals outside. Please take it from my heart. Thanks

I don't think you're coming off too strong I think you're just trying to help. I understand why you think this but my cats are very hard to keep inside. Trust me we have tried and tried to keep them inside but they are very sneaky and sly. They can slip out the door in seconds. Thanks for the advice though.

is anyway you fix the fence but wouldnt cost to much. to try and save your cats from these people

I know that they would let me fix their fense or I probably would sense they can't be responsible enough to do it themselves. Plus I don't want to go near those dogs and risk injury or worse. I wish I could though thanks for the advice.

this is really saddening and i think you should clearly warn your neighbours as their pets are very dangerous to other people of your locality.now we all have our own interests and tend to beliking them even though other people have their reservation regarding that.so please leave it to this and try and get them some attention by complaining.

I am so sorry to hear this and for the loss of your poor cats. We had a neighbour like that, only he used poison and ordered traps to put in the ivy. We had a cat come home with a pellet through her neck, and a number just disappeared. I would use evry method at your disposal to put a stop to those people.

Not to be the naysayer here or anything, but it may be difficult, if not impossible, to get any sort of restraining order against your neighbor based on him threatening your cats, not to mention you could still be potentially out court costs for filling such even if you're denied(you'd have to talk with someone more law savvy for confirmation on that).
All in all, if you have proof of your neighbor threatening your cats, I wouldn't wait for him/her/them to kill one before reporting such to animal control. I present such to them right now. In such situations, they'd likely show up at your neighbors, tell them to back off and explain to them the fines and likely jail time they'd face for killing any of your cats. In most cases, unless it's a disturbed(or other cases very stupid)individual, they aggressive party will likely back off rather than go to jail. Though they'll likely still gripe, moan, do some namecalling and act all bitter and whiney.
