fan or aircon

why do we buy aircon if a fan will do?

I do have an airconditioner in my lounge room but I also have a ceiling fan, I prefer the the ceiling fan and use that the most but I do use the aircon when it gets extremely hot which I think I used 3 times this summer just gone..
