Films on historical events have always been popular. Some of the old epics like Spartacus are classics, and others like Braveheart and Patriot have very little relationship to the historic events that they are supposed to be about. I particularly like the newer films taht try to really interpret historical events from the point of view of the participants. I admire Ken Loach's Land and Freedom for this. It is a very well observed film on the Spanish Civil War and well worth watching

Clint Eastwoods makes of WW2 were the best I have seen in a long time, Flags of our fathers and letters from Iowa Jima, what makes these movies so great is they are both told from the exact same time periods, but Flags of Our Fathers tells the war stories from Allied sides while Letters from Iowa Jima tells the war stories from officers on the Axis side, how each fought the other, the friends lost and battles won.

Yes, it was hard to believe they were Clint Eastwood films, a brilliant concept. It's teh realism of these that really brings the past to life for me

I thought Enemy at The Gates was good, the central story may have been fairly liberal with the truth, but the setting and look of the film was excellent.

Its a pity most historical stories seem to get hijacked by the producers and compromise. I thought Glory was quite good though as was Revolution but Mel Gibson's Braveheart and The Patriot were absolute rubbish.

your right about that, there has been some real trash. Mel Gibson should stick to being a crazy ficticious cop. Glory always brings a tear to my eye - considering how true it keeps to the real events it manages to stay a very personal film.

I like the historical films that are character driven like Anne Of the 1000 days and Mrs. Brown. And ther was a film i can't remember the title but it showed how the last royal family of Russia lived before the revolution. it was great.

Well, this might not be quite what you had in mind and a lot of people probably haven't seen it. It might not be the best, but it is different and highly enjoyable, especially if you have read the book, Mists of Avalon.
This is its plot summary: Magnificent adaptation of Marion Zimmer Bradley's feminist fantasy novel takes a look at the women behind King Arthur's throne and the battle between pagan beliefs and Christianity in 7th-century England. Anjelica Huston is Viviane, "The Lady of the Lake," a pagan princess who teaches niece Morgaine (Julianna Margulies) how to influence King Arthur in order to save paganism. Causing trouble is Morgause (Joan Allen), Viviane's power-hungry sister. Caroline Goodall, Michael Vartan and Samantha Mathis also star in this lavish saga.
I thought it was a wonderful depiction of a matriarchal, pre-Christian Britain. I also loved the way it celebrated the power of women, which isn't often shown in historical films.
