Yeah!
I use Linux since 2006 and I'm very happy with that.
There are many Linux live versions, here is a list:

Personally I tried Knoppix: http://www.knoppix.org/ and I found it very good.
I also have an AMD system and Knoppix works.
Good luck.
Add me as friend if you want some help with Linux.

As said in the first post try knoppix. It is the best of the lot of live CD's. The speed at which it works is just amazing. Developers have done many optimization on it to be the best Live CD and it is the best. Another one you may try is freespire(www.freespire.org). This Live CD is not as fast as Knoppix.

I agree with the previous posts concerning Knoppix, but strongly suggest that you try several different Linux distributions to decide which one suits you.
This link will display a full list of available Live CDs:

You can also install several distributions on a flash drive, which can be very useful indeed. You will need a 1 Gb or larger flash drive for most of them, but there are options for using a 256 Mb drive.
Check here for instructions of how to do this: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

There are many live cd of various Linux distributions. It's a little strange that Ubuntu live cd doesn't work for you. I don't know if you have the latest version.
The best thing to do is try them out and find the best that suits you. I some time use Ubuntu for fun and it works flawless.
