My husband and I created a new frugalw ebsite and we are trying to promote the forum by getting people to join. Any suggestions on how to promote the forum and get new members to join without paying to post. We are looking for real members who want to be there and enjoy the discussions.
Any thoughts?

do you have a main webpage or is it just a forum? if you dont have a main webpage make one. then get it listed on search engine.
and of course you can promote your forum on another forum or online community like this. and exchange your link with other relevant website.

Yes we have a main site www.frugalwiz.com and that is indexed and getting good hits. We are trying to build the forum part of the site.
Thanks for your comments!

just taken a look at your website. don't you think its time to get a new look for your website? i hope you not offended by this.
another tricks to get traffic to your forum, you can give away free ebook about whatever you focus on. make a rich informational ebook, and put your web/forum link in it.
you might want to give this a try.

Hey, i've visited your forums, and i think apart from the things that have been said by others here, i would want to suggest, why not you go to sites like getafreelancer.com and post a project there.
You would have to spend some money on this, as the project you'd be posting is to offer anyone to make say, like 1000 posts on your forum and you pay him some money. Or make him get like, 10 people to post about 100 posts each person on your forum.
This trick is common to develop new forum. As the number of threads on your forum have increased, you can get other people to be interested in your forum. It's just as for the beginning you have to spend some money (not that much anyway). This way, you are sure that your on budget, because if you launch a "paid forum" like here on mylot, you might be running out of budget.
Good luck then.

Thanks for the advice, I am still trying to avoid the pay per post becaue I want real members. What do you think of a contest for new members that runs a month? It would feature an entry for everytime you do a certain amount of posts. We would give away say a gift card or cash. What do you think?

You could also blog about the site and create a link to it. I do this with all my ac articles. i have an account on blogg it and thats where i post a small blog about it and go from there. it has created some traffic to my ac account, its slow but it works. also if you are on myspace you can post bullitins and blogs there and leave a link to the site. it may work.
