I suppose the mass media has had a lot of influence, the adverts, the reality shows place emphasis on the young. One of the reason emphasis is on the young could be to occupy them as they have the most energy and they are also the future of a nation. But the older generation are no less valuable with their wealth of experiences.

Thank you for your comments. Hopefully someday people in the US will realize the valuable asset of the older generation. I read a comment online the other day that was complaining about Meredith Viera having crows feet and "old-looking" eyes, like it was some kind of sin.

In Singapore, we have the same problem too but perhaps more so with the younger generation. Our government does a lot to promote the "value" of the older generation. I guess that helps a lot.

I know there are companies in the US who are making a point of hiring older workers. The thing that gets me. At 55 I can't find anyone who even wants to talk to me about a teaching job. On the other hand, we have people in their 80s in congress, and people just keep voting for them.

I dont think everyone thinks that! I, for one, loves to be with more matured people, i can learn so much from them as they will be teaching me and guiding me from their experince. Senior people made mistakes and learned from their lesson therefore, they are the best person to go to for advise!!

For me it is age discrimination for looking too young and having a young voice. I have two home businesses and people look at me like please you are too young. I'm 24 years old and five foot tall and have been mistakened for being still in high school by my appearence. As far as older people and in the work force I think they work the hardest. I don't know why anyone would prefer one over the other. It should be the quality of a person that decides their value more than the age.

This is a very valid point missybal, age discrimination is directed at both ends of the age spectrum and not at older people only. It seems very difficult for people to consider a person's ability without their appearance and age being taken into consideration, even if it is done so unconsciously.

This is no doubt an old fashioned idea based on the fact that many years ago elder people were affected by their age more than happens in current society. This is shown by the fact that people are now living much longer, and therefore becoming a problem due to the increasing number of pensioners.
The trend towards this is definitely improving and I feel that age discrimination is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
