I am sooooooo angry at my sons teacher. He took a fruit bar to school and his teacher said that he was not allowed to have it for recess and would not allow him to eat it either. My son then had to wait until lunch time to have something to eat. I am not very happy with her at all. I am going to talk to her on Monday and want advice from people on what to say to her. Thanks.

I'm astonished by this. She is wrong doing this especially it is a fruit bar that is healthy. I don't understand why she did this. I agree that you need to talk to her on Monday and have her explain to you why she did it. Tell her that you don't agree with what she did and you want to know the reasons why she didn't let your son eat his fruit bar during his recess. After she explains herself you will know better the next steps to take.

There may have been a reason why your son was not allowed to eat it. Health and safety rules are so strict nowadays the teacher may have just been sticking to them. Children need to be supervised when eating incase of choking. If your child decided to eat and play at the same time it may have caused a problem. Also if your son is seen eating, then all the kids may start bringing in food. Most kids have breakfast and wait till lunchtime to next eat. Maybe that is the rules in your sons school. Before you go in and say something, just try to see it from the teachers side as well. They have rules to follow and maybe they were just doing that.

My children have been attending this school for the last 7 years. They have always taken fruit bars before and have never had a problem. I cant see what the problem is anyway considering the school sell the exact fruit bar in the school canteen.

I can understand your concern now you have have explained the situation as I was unsure what you meant. Obviously the new teacher needs to have things explained to her and not make decisions on their own which will upset the kids and parents. I agree you have every right to speak to this teacher and explain to them why they are changing something that has been ok by all other staff in the past. We have a healthy schools policy and the more kids eat good food the better so I do not understand this teachers reason why your son cannot eat his snack. If you get no joy you should go and see the Head and find out why the school does not keep to a whole school policy instead of allowing individual teachers to change the rules depending on what they feel. This will certainly confuse all the kids. Good luck!!

My sons school provide a choice of fresh fruit for morning break and we pay 20p for a 1/3 pint bottle of milk. I think when they get into juniors they have to pay 20p for their fruit too, but it's still a realyl good idea. What would happen if a child at your sons school had missed breakfast, not being allowed a snack could make their tummy poorly or in extreme cases really mess up their sugar levels and performance in class. Do they have a rule for diabetic children? I would think that there is no reason not to allow healthy snacks at morning or afternoon break.

That is ridiculous, his teacher should not have said that to him. It was a healthy recess and he should have been allowed to eat it. I think you should go in and talk to her and if your not satisified after that, then you should maybe speak to the principal. Like you said, they sell it in the school canteen, so why is that ok, but not for your son to eat it? I don't think teachers should be allowed to say anything to the child about what they are eating, if they have concerns, then they should speak to the parents. Even if it is an unhealthy snack, they shouldn't be allowed to stop them from eating it.

Thanks for your comments. I am still very irate about the whole thing. This teacher is fresh out of uni and thinks that she knows what is best for every child. I know that I wont be the only parent complaining too.
