We leave our closed captioning on all the time on our TV. At first it was because my adult daughter has a hearing loss and just missed too much of what was going on on her favorite shows. And it was easier just to leave it on anyway. Now even I have come to depend on it because sometimes you really can't hear what's happening because the sound quality is not so good. Then other times, the closed captions are telling you something that you never saw happen on the show. Then there are those times that they add a few extra things like music, sounds. My daughter and I have really laughed over some of the things that show up on closed caption. For example, the CC will say "dramatic music playing." That's just a funny little addition that sort of adds something to the show for us. When my oldest grandson started school, the CC helped him to read too so we are big fans of it. And we almost can't watch a show at all if it doesn't have closed captions. Some of the older TV shows on DVD don't have CC or even subtitles. It's very pesky when we have to turn the TV so loud that the walls rattle!

What really gets me is when the closed captioning will put titles of songs up. Like, such-and-such song by so-and-so plays. If the person's completely deaf, would they even know the song? I suppose there's some way they might, but I still find it kinda funny.

That's a good question you have there. As being deaf we can feel the beat of the music but as for the words we learned them in different ways such as someone would do a sign language or the words of the music books. All I remember was learning the beat of the music as for the words it took me along time to know what they are saying.thanks for your responds.

Although I don't have any real hearing problems yet, I usually like to have it on because sometimes, the actors will mumble or something and you totally miss what they say. If the closed captioning is on, you can just read what they said! Same thing if they said something and you just plain couldn't understand what they said. Know what I mean?

we seldom turn on our closed caption when we watch movies or TV programs. But during those times where my girlfriend invites her korean friends and students to watch movies at home, we tend to put the closed captions on so they can find it easy to understand the movie coz some of them are not that good in listening yet. So the subtitles is of great help.

I grew up in the 60's with the loud bands, so my hearing is equivalent to working in a loud factory all of my life. I have one hearing aid but I hardly ever wear it...lol. Naturally, I use closed captions all the time. Most of the time, it helps but sometimes it is so far off, that I really do not understand why they have bothered at all.

Yes we use it a lot , sometimes hubby is busy and my son has music on upstairs not too loud but distracting , I like it on when there is a programe with background music on too and you cant hear what they are saying because of the music ( this really annoys me ) xx

I love my closed captioning :) We started it when my niece was a baby because we were living in very tight quarters and we wanted to keep the tv volume down while she was going to sleep. We found we really liked having it. We could understand somethings better then we could before. We also found out that children who grow up with closed captioning learn to read earlier, which really makes sense when you think on it. Now though I'm so used to having it that when I don't it feels weird. When I don't have it on I have a hard time hearing everything, even though I don't consciously read every bit of the closed captioning it just seems to fill in the gabs my hearing doesn't pick up on. So yes I use it with my TV and with my DVD's. It really helps me out.

I read the closed caption sometimes and especially when I go to visit my grandmother she has trouble hearing so she has it on I read it sometimes because volume goes out on tv but I read it sometimes just to see what it says but it does not do the commercials I think they need to fix that.
