Enough is enough... fired two people in one month!

When I have an employee who is just not "getting it", I will try everything in my power to help them improve. When they do, it is extremely satisfying! Sometimes, unfortunately, there are those people who just don't care, refuse to improve, and must eventually be terminated. Generally, I have a sense of failure afterward.
This month, I had to dismiss two people. I'd have thought, after the first person was let go, the other one might have had an "Aha moment," and worked to shape up before I shipped him out. Alas, his behaviors just worsened, so today was his last day as well.
Rather than feeling I failed, I'm actually feeling quite good about this. I know that I did everything I could to help them understand my expectations. I think my other employees are feeling good knowing I will take care of problems that affect them.
Would anyone like to share thoughts, feelings, experiences, about firing people?

It is very difficult to fire someone. I have owned a business in which I had 13 employees. On ocassion, I would have to let someone go. It was the hardest part of the job. I always tried to help people who were having a hard time, or people who just didn't "get it". I applaud your positive attitude; you did not fail. You succeeded, gracefully. Currently I am just finishing up management training for a world wide known food establishment. Unfortunately, I will have the responsibility to hire and fire when the training is completed. I can't say that I look forward to that particular part of the job, but it does go with the territory. The people that I will manage already have a good idea of what I will expect from them, and hopefully will step up and do their jobs the way they were trained to do them. They also know that I will be there for them, if they need me, in any situation, whether being work related or in their personal lives. Pat yourself on the back, you deserve it for caring so much!

Unfortunately there are some people that don't realize they have to do something to earn the paychecks they are handed. They expect everyone else to do their work for them because somehow they are special. You should not have a sense of failure after terminating someone because there are some people that will never "get it." Those people make it difficult for the employees that are doing a good job and are having to take up the slack for the ones that are not. Those good employees need and expect you to take care of the problems that affect them.

I have never been in a posistion to have to fire someone and don't think I would be able to do this as I am too soft and always worried about hurting someone else's feelings .
Where I am working they were looking for supervisors and though in some aspects the job looks better then what I am doing ,I don't believe I would ever apply because you would have to make sure others did there work and I know how everyone gets upset when they make new rules ( myself included ) as it is a change from the way you are used to doing things . And would not be able to handle the hostility and would end up backing down when I shouldn't lol .
