I think it's a good decision [to retire from one-day cricket] on Anil Kumble's part.It is a wise decision as well, because I do believe that he still has a couple of years of Test cricket left in him and this will ensure that he will be fresh every time he goes into a Test match.
He's been an outstanding performer for India in the one-day game. without a shadow of doubt, India's best one-day bowler in the last 15 years or so. and that's a tribute to not only how consistent he has been but also his competitive instincts and his ability to come in,game after game and compete at the highest level, for a decade and a half - it just shows what an outstanding bowler he is.Surely has.
For me, Kumble has always been tremendously competitive and consistent; may be the only Indian bowler to do so. you can't have a career that long without having those two qualities. I think he's a national treasure and the day he hangs up his boots is the day everyone will realize is that he has been one of the greatest cricketers ever to have played cricket for India. Because bowlers' performances aren't often given the credit that they deserve. I've often asked people: 'How much is a hundred wickets worth, in terms of runs?' There are varying answers. some say 2500 runs, some say 3000. So, if you look at that, then 500 wickets is over 15000 runs in Test cricket and he's got an outstanding. ne-day record as well.
Till today, no Indian batsman has got 15000 runs in Test match cricket. In fact no one.
So when you take that in perspective and the contribution he has had in India winning matches; it's outstanding.
