The Recent Pet Food Recalls

Was anyone else really freaked out by the pet food recalls? I was and still am. I have been feeding my cat the best food (so they say) you can buy (Hill's Science Diet, IAMS). I found out that IAMS was one of the foods recalled, specifically their wet food that comes in pouches. I had also fed my cat some of that very type of food in the past few weeks. I'm now considering putting him on a raw food diet, after taking him to the vet this week. I also read this awful article this week (I don't know if it's true) that said that some pet food manufacturers use the bodies of euthanized dogs and cats and grind them up and put them into pet food, to be consumed by our cats and dogs! I'm sure a raw food diet would be better overall and I'm pretty set on doing this. I found a site that has good instructions for doing this.

If you can do the raw food diet it is excellent. When I looked into it I found it to be very cost prohibitive because of the quality of meat you must use. Our cats are use to having food out all of the time. You can't do that on a raw food diet, you can only leave the food out a little while before you run the risk of it spoiling.

You're absolutely right. I'm doing it, and they say you shouldn't be leaving food out all the time for your pets anyway, that it isn't the natural way for carnivores to eat. I've also found that to introduce it to your pet can be quite tricky and you need to add supplements to the food (especially digestive enzymes, at least in the beginning). Your pet has to adapt to eating raw meat and vegetables put through a food processor and ground finely. The vegetables are to assimilate the vegetation found naturally in the stomachs of prey.

I'am very worried about this whole thing. Normally I buy wet and dry but I bought a big bag of Science Diet Light for my cat and wanted to finish that off so I stopped buying the the wet temporarly. Then this happened. So far my cat is fine and I constantly looking up info about the recall. I hope they clear this up soon. Pet food is very expensive and we trust them to take care of of our pets.

I highly doubt that pet food manufacturers would use euthanized animals in their food. I'm sure you are hearing all kinds of scare rumors because of this recent crisis. As you can see, they willingly take millions of their products off the shelves to be safe. They are in the market for the health of our pets and I think this was just a very unfortunate incident. As yet we don't know who to blame for it. My cats both have to be on special food bought at the vet, so I'm glad this didn't affect my pets, but it's terrible to think you are buying the best product for your pets and something like this happens.
