Vacuums

While it used to be considered that the modern day iron was the best invention of freeing women from some of the drudgery of housework....I think the vacuum is fantastic! (of course I despise sweeping) What sort of vacuum do you use? an upright? or cannister? name brand? bagless? or bag variety? do you have central vacuuming? My mother had kirby's while I was growing up - back then they did not have the inner paper bags, but you scraped the inside of the air bag down which pushed all the debris out the bottom. She emptied it onto a sheet of newspaper and wrapped it up for the garbage. After going through a new vacuum ever year, I decided it is silly to keep putting another 150 dollars out for something that won't last. So, we bit the bullet and got an Oreck. It has an 8 year warrenty, so it was worth the money right there. It actually works great and is very lightweight to handle. If I had not chosen oreck it would've been the dyson. What do you think of the Vacuum you currently have? if you are not happy with it, what would you choose?

We have an old Oreck that is like 20 years old or something. It is really heavy, but works great. Too bad we hardly ever use it. We pulled up all the carpet in our rental house because our son was having too many asthma attacks and the only thing we hadn't done was rip out the carpet. Once the carpet was gone, no more attacks. If we ever do get another vacuum, it will be a Rainbow. They are so awesome. I saw the presentation for one and I know a few people who have them and they are the most wonderful thing ever invented. They can get your carpet so clean. And they can clean your bed, the couch, the pillows, toys, etc. They also can be used as air purifiers. They are just too awesome.

my mom had a kirby also-came with about 6 boxes of stuff.she could never get that belt not to burn out LOL we have an upright hoover presently.it has a bag to it,but i wish it were one you could reuse. if i had the money though,i would buy another electrolux cannister vacuum.we had one previously from the '50's or'60's,and it worked quite well still,i thought.

It seems electrolux is pretty reliable. While I have heard of them I do not believe I've seen them in the stores. Are they only found in Vacuum shops or from salesmen? maybe they are a regional company.

that is very frugal of you, and I admire you for it. It is better for you too, this way, great exercise compared to vacuuming!

I have an upright which is an electrolux. I like it for the upright, but my best vacuum is my Miele. It is truly a good vacuum. They are expensive but they work well. They have a heavy bag by heavy I don't mean it weighs a lot, but rather feels like cloth rather than paper and it closes itself when you go to take it out so you don't have to breath in the dust. Lots of neat features. I love it...

I have never heard of them, are they a foreign brand, or just real exclusive? I hear that cannisters do a much better job of cleaning...but I always figured they would be cumbersome, dragging the cannister behind you. Do you find this to be true at all?

I think the canister does the best job but I must say the electrolux I do not like in a canister yet for an upright it is awesome. These models are very popular here in Canada.

I don't really require that much from a vacuum cleaner. Any vacuum cleaner, in my opinion, is already better than a broom and dustpan. I just need it to suck up the dirt and mess, and it is set to be on my favorites' list.

I hate vacuuming! Our vacuum is bagless, but it is really, REALLY heavy and hard to lug up and down the stairs, it is even so heavy it is hard to push. It has a setting on it for the thickness of the carpet - the thinner/shorter the carpet, the lower the number. I don't exactly like our vacuum, but I don't know what we'd choose otherwise.

I love using my vacuum, I have a 3 in one vac it I like it cause I can vacuum the carpet and my furniture off with it and the linoleum floors also and it keeps alot of the dust and allergens out of the air because it doesn't just push the dust around it sucks it up. I have always wanted to try the oreck. I have seen the commericals and infomericals and I was always saying I wanted to get one but never did. I have a 3 way vac by the makers of bissell, it does a great job for the small jobs I have for it. I have had it for 15 years. And it still works like the day I got it.

I used to have an Electrolux when my kids were small, but when it fizzled out I bought me a Kenmore canister. I always buy canister vacs, I love them, I can do floors and carpet much better than with an upright. I like to vacuum everything, not just the floors. Right now I am using one from Sears that is great. But I always wondered about the Orek and also the Dyson. I think I would consider one of those for my next vacuum purchase. Thanks for letting me know you like it.

Great tpoic !!! We have 4 cats, 3 longhairs so I vacuum practically every day!! I really like vacuuming; drowns out any other noise in the house and there's not much thinking involved. I use an upright, a Sharp though its not made anymore. I use allergen bags(disposable)... My trusted guy at the vacuum store does NOT like Dyson. Says they need lots of repairs, in fact he doesn't sell them anymore. We have lots of carpet, I do change the bag often and am still amazed at how much gunk I get in a bag!! The other thing my vacuum guy doesn't like iste price of the Dyson. I really don't know how I can justify spendig $600.00 on a vacuum.....
