firstly you need to decide the usage. whether its for travel or staying home. better get pc if it just for home. and get a laptod if it is for travel. for pc, make sure ram is 512mb and above. hard disk is about 80gb is safe. pent 4 3.2ghz or pent D 2.8ghz, depends. get dvd writer, so that you can make dvd or cd. laptod is quite similar. get 512mb ram, storage of 60-80 gb. celeron or amd, your choice. other than that, find our free gift. don't forget about the warranty and the software. especially the os

Just so you know I have both a laptop and a desktop. With a laptop at home I can take it out to the deck and surf the net or post here on mylot. I cant take a desktop out there. So the laptop is more versitale that a desktop even in the home
If you are a game player then definatly a desktop. Reason is the better cooling capability of the desktop.

I am using laptops since many years. It gives you a great flexibility to move around, take it with you and with the same capacities as a desktop computer. I like ACER but my favorite is HP. Their Pavilion models are now available with integrated webcams. Be shure that you have enough memory (512 MB or more). A 80 giga hard disk should be ok.

IBM Think Pad / Leveno for the first choice if possible get the biggest hard drive you can afford. and a minimum of 1 gig of Ram. This one has the trackpoint as well as the touch pad.
if not that then go for
a Dell Laptop they are just as good as IBM. and they do have great support
