Do you find your corner shop to be really expensive?

I find that my corner shop is really, really expensive. A few weeks ago i sent my partner there to get a can of coke as i really fancied some, and it cost nealy £1. I found out after that our local Kebab/Pizza place sells cans of coke for only £0.60. I would have thought that a take-away place would be more expensive than a corner shop, but it seems it's the other way round in our case! I just couldn't beleive how expensive that can of coke was, and it's not just cans of coke, evetrything they sell is much, much more expensive than in the supermarkets. I know we are paying extra for the convienience but i think they are taking the proverbial p*ss. Anyone else have a really expensive corner shop?

i always find it is expensive but it is so much more convinient to shop for things there. Also, I find the quality of goods i can get from the corner shop is so much better than what i can get from the super markets. On balence, ill continue to shop at the supermarket because i have to watch the pennies but do like the idea of a corner shop as i can get things as i need them blessed be

I don't find the quality differs at all really. In fact sometimes things are worse quality if anything at the corner shop, like the fruit & veg they sell isn't that great.

95p for a tin of Heinz tomato soup is taking it a bit far and thats just one of the massively priced items at my local shop. They charge more for convenience and they know they can get away with it because people will pay twenty or thirty pence more rather than travelling further and going to a supermarket such as Tesco just to save those twenty or thirty pence. The internet does offer ways around this of course by shopping online and getting your shopping delivered. Something i also do to avoid having to pay the inflated prices of my local shop is to buy items from wholesalers and wearhouses so that i can get many items for prices that even beat supermarkets.

I tried shopping online but after the experiences i've had i'll never do it again! Our local Tescos isn't a long drive away anyway. For me there are no benefits to shopping online, in my experience you still have just as much hassle with it as simply going to the shop yourself.

I have always found the local shop to be far more expensive than a supermarket, but it is not very surprising considering the bulk purchasing power of a major chain. Naturally I buy most of my food from the supermarkets, but if you find that you need a bottle of milk or similar product the local shop is very convenient. I have no complaints about the price, especially since they are open at convenient times.

Unfortunately mine are not open at very convienient times! They don't open untill 8:00am in the morning, and i have to be at work for 8:00am so i can't use the shop in the morning for say if i run out of bread or milk for breakfast. Also, they shut quite early at night, 9:00pm, which is really early for a corner shop, i'd expect them to be open untill at least 10:pm or even 11:00pm.

Here in Canada the corner stores are also really expensive. I have learned to only shop there for food items in a pinch. I buy chocolate bars and newspapers at the corner shop but try to get everything else in the supermarket. I do appreciate though that the markup in a corner shop has to be considerably higher since their sales are lower. Also one pays for the convenience. Need a bag of snacks when guests drop in unexpectantly? Well the corner store is open until midnight and some are open 24 hours a day. Forgot something vital and need it on Christmas Day or Easter Sunday? Well my friendly corner store is open on those days. On those occasions I bite the bullet and pay the higher prices (much higher prices.)

Yes it is expensive! They take advantage of people's need for convenience. It's cheaper to buy what I need at the groccery store.

I used to have a really expensive corner shop near me but it shut down a few years ago now because no-one was buying from there!

all of the gas station/convenience stores around here have hiked up prices. It is ridiculous what they think they can charge. They prey on those who have no other choice but to shop there as they have no car or whatever. It is crazy.

Our corner shop is also expensive. I hardly go there because there is a SuperCenter Walmart closer to my house. I can get everything there, even gas.

I have to agree with you on that. I will only get something from them if Im really desperate. Yes they are way too expensive for me.

Well, look at it this way, at least you have a corner store. A lot of us don't have that kind of convenience. The nearest "corner" store is 2 miles away. The small Tesco is 2 miles downhill in the other direction. So, needless to say, I would go to Tesco. No matter which store I choose, it is up hill all the way home. Maybe more housing projects will mean more stores. Not that I want housing projects, I prefer the farmland. So, I will keep on walking to Tesco and not grumble for the sore feet.

Well yes it is - very expensive! But then it also opens from 6.00am til midnight, and the convenience outweighs the extra cost in my opinion. It is only one family running it - they never take time off, are always friendly and helpful, will order anything in you want, and must have massive overheads for all the extra heating/lighting etc over the weekends and at night. I am quite prepared to pay them more for the convenience.

i refuse to shop at the corner store now cause it's so over priced. last time i went there i bought a 2 L. bottle of pepsie and it cost $2.50, at the grocery store it's $1.17. i coulnd't beleive how much he was over charging so i haven't been back since.

I'm surrounded by Tesco Express shops - the only corner shop around me closed almost two years ago because it couldn't compete but the chains make their money by bulk purchase and can offer B.O.G.O.F or deals on multiple purchases and small shops can not carry the stock so have to charge enough to cover their costs. I must admit, pricing in this country mystifies me anyway. Was in London two weeks ago. I stayed at a 5* hotel (got it cheap on an internet deal). They had small tubes of pringles in the mini bar for £4.50. The Sainsbury's mini shop across the road sold them for £0.99 yet here I can get them a lot cheaper. I know London is expensive anyway but thats a rip off

Almost all corner shops or convenience stores are much more expensive than a supermarket. This is not just in the UK either it's worldwide. Here in Australia the corner shops are much more expensive. I suppose we are paying for the convenience and of course the corner shop does not buy in bulk like the supermarkets so the corner shops are probably paying more for their products than a regular supermarket.

Oh yeah the paying for the concienience to shop right close to home. Still for somethings I have found our 7-11 shop has just about the same price as the grocery story. It depends on the item. You just have to watch and decide whether it's worth the time and energy to go to the other store for the difference in money. Sometimes it is but other times it isn't worth driving over to the major store for one item.

i think all convienience stores are like that. they know they've got you, because it saves you time going to a bigger store,so they jack up the prices. the one around the corner from me is really expensive, but if you need something at 3 am,you really haven't a choice.

I find that corner stores are expensive, but I don't mind. Usually you only use it for 1 or 2 things here and there. But I feel for the shop keeper. Years ago I used to own a corner store. We got most of our stuff from a warehouse, but also went to the supermarket to get things as some stuff was cheaper there than at the warehouse. It always seemed very unfair, and you couldn't compete with them. Unfortunately, here in Australia, you are seeing more and more supermarkets and less cornerstores. The shop I owned is now closed due to a large supermarket went in close by.
