Backyard bird feeding is a convenient way to enjoy wildlife and teach your children about nature.
No matter where you live, you can put food outside your door, and some creature, feathered or furred, will show its appreciation and make an appearance. That's all it takes. Once you get started, it's hard to stop.
Before you know it, you're learning bird names. After awhile, you'll start to recognize individuals and the messages in their behavior and song.
I have 4 black oil sunflower seed feeders, 2 suet feeders, 2 bags of thistle, and 1 feeder of mixed hulled seeds and nuts. Here is some info on backyard bird feeding. Do you feed the birds or other wildlife in your backyard? Have you ever had a strange guest at the feeders?http://www.bcpl.net/~tross/by/backyard.html

Yes, we used to feed the birds. We get lovely exotic and colourful ones here in Oz. Rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, cockatoos. The trouble is that in attracting the cockatoos to our garden they were also doing a lot of damage to my garden of herbs that I have on the decking. Many a time i'd look out of the window and find one of the little darlings pecking away at something or other and totally destroying it. So, we don't feed the birds any more, just because of the cockatoos. I miss it - but what can you do! Also, the possums are attracted to the bird seed and of an evening you'd hear this terrible clatter as a possum would try to get into our wooden bird feeder which is hanging off the branch of a tree. Cheeky things, they also do enormous damage to our garden by eating our fruit.

No, I guess you wouldn't want to be attracting any more than you are alaready...lol Good god what fun I would have...hehee but not for long if it was my garden and fruit getting destroyed... They are some very pretty birds though... but smart.

I have a bird table in the back garden and a couple of nut feeders hanging in the tree close to the back door. I have loads of visitors to the table and feeders, and the squirrels always know where to come for a meal. I also have a robin that comes to the table every day and he is getting very tame.

Oh yes I have a few squirrels. I put some squirrel food out for them. It helps keep them from destroying the bird feeders..lol One time they stole the peanut feeder right off the hook.

Hello Mari, yes we do feed the bords and the squirrels my husband loves watching the squirrels frollicking around. My bothre in law also has chickens loose so sometimes what we throw out to the other animals they get. I love seeing my little sisters face light up when she feeds the birds and watches them eat in her excitement she sometimes scares them away but they always come back after a few moments to her delight. We have a few deers comes off our hill also to drink in the creek in front of our house and it is a sight to behold.Especially if they hhave the babies with them. we took some pinecones and cover ed them with peanut butter then rolled in bird seeds. It was a bit messy but worth it. We have alot of red cardinals around that is our state bird.

I have bird feeders here are not so many of them now that they are able to find their own food. I really enjoy watching the hummingbirds at their feeder. I make the nectarine myself and boy do they love it.

Oh I love the hummingbirds too. They won't be in my area for almost another month. Usually around the end of April or beginning of may.

I love feeding the wild birds in the backyard. we get sparrows, lenents (think thats the name), greckles, mockingbirds, mourning doves and lately have about 5 pale grey ringnecked doves. also hummingbirds, which are my favorite.
in fact, last week one of the ringnecks decided to make a trip into the kitchen via the open backdoor when i was running late to put the morning seed out. lol little booger, sat on my hand for about 2 minutes until i had someone sprinkle some seed out, then he went for it straight away.

I live way far out from the city, and have to be very careful what I feed wild life. We have wolves, coyottes, snakes, rodents of all kinds, boar, wild donkeys and horses. I put out a lot of greens for the rabbits and rodents. I also put out a lot of bread and cookie crumbs for birds. It's fun to see them eat. But, they can become dependent on you too much, and not survive well, so I do it only sometimes. I rated you another ++, keep up the great posts.

Hubby planned to feed birds, but quit doing it at least a year ago. I dumped out the storage tub full of mixed bird seed in a section of my yard, and we have enjoyed the little finches, the cardinals, robins, sparrows, and blue jays. The squirrels enjoyed this treat as well. We have a lot of wildlife as we plant lots of trees and shrubs, including fruit trees, and we have a compost heap. All last weekend we could hear an owl hoot even in the daytime.

In our area it is not a good idea to leave food out for any of God's critters. Winter isn't as bad but summer time is realy taboo
Unless of course you want a backyard that had bears, wolves or foxes in it.
They are such a menious to every one in town. Especially the children who want to go out and play
Town had alreay notices via mail to be extra careful while out Numerous sightings of wolves We have already acouple of bears so we know they are awake too now
We do NOT feed the wild life

I do have a feeder in my yard. I mostly use black oil sunflower. I also plant sunflowers. I had something eating things in my yard, but it was in the garden, and some lower branches on the trees. I do not know what it was though! We have more squirrels than birds and they tend to rob the feeder so I only fill it until they find it then stop for a while. I also have a couple of humming bird feeders that I need to get put out also. It is time for them soon.
Thanks for the website.

We do have a bird feeder. I love watching the birds. I put the food out because I know the song birds seem to be getting fewer and fewer every year. I figure as long as I feed them that I am helping them out. It doesn't stop the crows from coming to breakfast. One will swing sideways on the perch while the other family members are on the ground getting all the goodies. They do take turns on the feeder though.
We did have a heron one morning. He was walking up the stream at the bottom of our yard by our firepit. There were plenty of seeds on the ground and he just hopped up to have a look around. It must not have been to his liking as he didn't stay.

Yes we happen to have 4 feeders in the yard year round. Just so the birds stay here.We enjoy watching them. The kids learn from them.
