Last night I tried a new recipe. It is an old Amish recipe and it sounded interesting so I figured why not try something new. So, I made Poor Man's Bread Pie. I didn't think I would like it, but figured it wasn't going to cost a lot so if it was awful I could just throw it out. It reminded me alot of bread pudding, which I hate, while I was making it. But it turned out really good. So, good in fact that I plan on making it again for Easter. The best part is how simple it was to make. I mean, it was super simple and very very low cost. Here is the recipe if anyone is interested in making it. If you do, please tell me what you think. Also, I would love to hear about other super low cost recipes that you may have.
Poor Man's Bread Pie
1 8inch single crust pie shell(I used a foil pie pan, but glass works well too)
dry bread, crumbled real fine. you need enough crumbs to fill the pie shell to the top
2 tablespoons of cinnamon
1 table spoons of all purpose flour
5 teaspoons of granulated sugar
5 to 7 cups of whole milk
Crumble the bread into the pie shell until you have filled the shell. In a small bowl mix the cinnamom, sugar and flour. Spinkle this mixture over the bread crumbs. Pour the milk over the crumb mixture one cup at a time until throughly soaked. Bake at 375 until the center is firm and no longer wiggles. About 35-45 minutes depending on your oven.
You can serve it warm, but I liked it better after it cooled completely. I also added some apple pie spice to mine and used old cinnamon bread. You can use any old bread that you have on hand. If your bread isn't dry, just cut it up into cubes and stick it in the oven at 200 for about 3 hours. It will dry it out perfectly. The spice mixture can be adjusted to your tastes. It really does taste great. It's also a great way to use up that out-of-date bread that starts to get hard by the end of the week. I just stuck my dried out bread into a gallon bag and beat it into crumbs with a meat mallet.
I would really like to know what other people think of this pie. So if you have ever had it, please let me know what you thought. If you haven't had it, you have to try it.

I've never had this, but it sounds really easy and what a great way to use up stale bread. I like your idea of useing cinnamon bread and apple pie spice. I wonder if you could add some fruit to it too. maybe some dried fruit like raisins, apricots, or apples.
I also wonder if you could make a savory version? Withthe right spices it would state a bit like a "stuffing" pie. Maybe for a savory version you could use chicken broth instead of milk, and use poultry spices. I suppose that goes into the "experiment" catagory :-)
Thanks for the ideas!!!

oooh, that sounds like a great idea. I will have to try it with fruit and try making a savory version. Maybe add chopped ham to it too or left over turkey. Kinda like a thanksgiving leftover pie. Now, I want to go experiment.

I love this recipe. It's a great way to use up left over bread and most of the ingredients are already in the cupboards. I love the idea of using it with applies and it's probably really good with some raisins mixed in. Makes a nice morning treat for breakfast.
