Why do we have to option to add tags when we respond to a discussion?

I usually add a tag, it makes it easier for someone to find similar discussions. Mind you I do not put just one word on my tags, I usually do a short phrase on what the subject was about. I know that sometimes when someone writes a lot, you have no idea what the subject is about, but mostly it is in the subject and at the last couple of sentences.
