Riddles : the lighest ball

Here goes my riddle :
"you have 12 balls and a pair of scales. you know that there's one ball that lighter than the rest. how can you find it in three weighting?"
of course the first one with right answer will be mark best response.

Here are the steps:
1. Place 6 balls on the right side and 6 on the left side. The side with the lightest ball will be higher on the scale. Throw out the other side of the scale. You will now have 6 balls left.
2. Repeat step one except use 3 on the left and 3 on the right. After, you will have 3 balls left.
3. Place one ball on the right side, one ball on the left, and one in your hand.
If the scale is even, the lightest ball is in your hand.
If the scale is tilted to the right, the lightest ball is on the left.
If the scale is tilted to the left, the lightest ball os on the right.
