SONGS; what are they trying to say right now?

Can you understand what most of the singers right now are trying to say with their songs? Unlike the songs from the past like "Sad Movies Always Make Me Cry" and "Yellow polkadot Bikini" They are trying to relay a story. I hope modern singers now can try to improve their singing not just humming a tune or singing a word.
