this has been on my mind for the past few days. i was reading a novel and one of the characters mentioned that he was a distant cousin of the main character, TWICE REMOVED... well, what do you mean when you say once, twice or thrice removed?! cant you jsut say a distant, very distant relative?

It means that there two genrations between you and your relatives.
