the phrase was actually coined from a song in an original Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949).. it was called "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" it became more popular after Marilyn Monroe sang it in the 1953 film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." She was talking about affairs with married men.. some of the lyrics are : Men grow cold As girls grow old, And we all lose our charms in the end. But square-cut or pear-shaped, These rocks don't loose their shape. Diamonds are a girl's best friend !! The quote "Man's Best friend actually is derived from: "The one absolutely unselfish friend that humans can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts them, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is their dog." ~George Graham Vest, Senator of Missouri, 1855 which is covering all humans as in "Man Kind" So dogs are considered all "man kinds" best friend because of their nature.

I agree with you , I could quite easily live without diamonds but I couldn't live without friends , diamonds can't chat to you , they can't give you a hug and they cant sit and share a coffee and a cake with you either , Give me a good friend anytime xx

well i think refering to "Man" in that means all people man and woman. when it comes to diamond, however, i think most women like jewelries and because most guys would love to be able to give a diamond to the woman he loves... the rest is history i guess.

Yeah, I wanna suggest that a women should make cats as their bestfriend than a diamond. Why? I dunno, LOL it is just because Dog is the man's bestfriend and so why not cats for womens? hehe

I don't know.. probably because diamonds are considered the most precious stone, right? So I guess it represents the beauty of women. Just like men.. dogs are considered one of the bravest animals, and they represent the bravery of man.. I don't know if what i'm saying is true but these are just based from my own observations. I'm not really into jewelries and it's not what defines me as a woman. Maybe because since women are precious, they're like diamonds that are beautiful and precious too.

Even I've wondered why diamonds are said to be girls best friend. I dont think its universal there may be girls who dont like diamonds. Can anyone tell me something that all women like which can be said to be womens best friend that is more easily accesible

I think 'Doubt' is the first best friend of woman, then desire that is diamond and every thing after diamond. Man's best friend is He Himself first. Actually Women love dogs and cats more than men. Its really true.
