Showers of blessing--it rained bits of ice here in Thailand yesterday.

Yesterday was extremely hot as if I was in the oven. It was funny though when I logged in at myLot the weather said that Bangkok had 7 degrees Celsius. But actually it felt like it was the hottest day. However in the afternoon it poured ice--bits of ice came down on us.
Can anyone explain how it happens? Thanks.

I wonder how would that feel? I must be great touching those snowflakes and feeling their cool texture in ones hand. I don't actually know how could it have happened since I'm an ignorant when it comes to snow. I also wondered if it smells nice just like the scent after the rain.

According to JudyT, that was a hail and not snowflakes. I understand they are very different things. It felt strange and thrilling. But because the ground was so warm, they melt easily. There was a nice scent because there was enough water to cool the ground and the grass.

I really dont have any idea, but it is a strange coinsidence, here also. In Dubai we experianced strong hot wins all through the morning and suddenly in the late afternoon, it became cloudy and started hailstorms. It was raining heavily. Day by day the weather is turning weired!

7 degrees celcuis is very cold,. cold enough for water from clouds to turn to ice.
I can't imagine why you felt hot, exzcept perhaps it may have been very humid.
The ice is called hail.
I gather it is very unusual for Thailand.

It's indeed unusual.
However, I think there was a mistake with the weather update. The temperature in Thailand particularly in Bangkok won't normally go down to 20 except for a couple of days in December. The temp right now is about 100 Fahrenheit. Fish are dying, there is red tide in the south. All these are cause by the climate shift I think.

That is hail. its caused by the upper atmosphere cooling the water vapuor, the little pieces of ice bump together in the wind, and stick to each other. as they get heavier, they start to fall picking up more little particles along the way. usually, the warm air melts them and they fall as rain. however, when there is a thermal inversion and there is a cold air mass close to the surface of the land, the ice doesn't have time to melt and falls as hail or snow. That happens here in Canada all the time. I have seen hail stones about the size of a small orange abd have seen pictures of even larger ones. Lasr summer I got stuck under a spruce tree while hail the size of cherries fell. Luckinly some people were driving past and let me get in their car until it stopped nearly an hour later.

Wow, that was very informative. Thanks for your reply. I really would hardly call it hail but with your explanation I will now. It's really strange here in the tropics to witness hails. No thunder, no lightning just out of the blue the hail came down to cool us off.
Thanks, God, for the shower of blessing.

Yes, DJmarion, actually it happened in the Philippines before. That was 1996 I remember it was also fiery hot the day before and then that day it rained hails. I was in a bus and it sounded like stones falling on us. I saw the ice as they got into the bus because one of the windows didn't have shutter.
Today however it's fiery again here in my school.
