Children are inventive by nature. Give a child a pan and some utensils that are in the house and they will play. Simple items can be used for play just as much as shop bought toys.
My little boy adores catalogues, he loves looking at all the pictures and naming the items. He prefers these above regular books.
He loves playing with a few stones and a bucket and can play like that for hours on end eventhough he has many other toys.
For a six month old you could probably create things that make noises, home made rattles, an old pan and a stick to make a drum, make some soapy water and blow bubbles that she can grab.

It's easy to make a stuffed soft toy. All you need is some old cloth- you can trace and cut out some character and sew it up. A homemade rattle can b made from a wooden spoon (or just a stick) some thread and bits of plastic. Almost anything can be turned into a toy (be careful that you think about the safety aspect though). Have fun!
