technology for the not so young

A clip about where technology ends up. - A clip about where some people would love to stick modern technology, or where to stick old technology.

How many 'not so young' members of mylot, keep up with the latest technology? I am finding it is getting harder to keep up with the latest technology as when you learn it another updated model comes out in the shops. Last month for the first time I got a cellphone, it was about 2 days later that I finally figured out how to use it properly, so I thought that was quite good for a nearly 60 yr old. About a week ago I won on 'Trademe' an MP3/MP4 digital video player which you download music and video off the net, with that I sat and looked at the book and thought to myself "what on earth have I let myself into", once I set it up following the instructions one step at a time I managed to get music and video downloaded, for that valient effort I awarded myself 10 out of 10. I would love to hear some funny stories about 'Things' you have acquired and how you went about learning to use them.

PC toilet - This makes more sense :-)
I am happy to admit to being a technophobe and find even the most basic functions of a computer can be baffling to me. It took me the best part of a week to get to grips with using the most basic mobile phone. At 55 years young I don't understand the jargon or the lingo, operating a mobile phone as a phone is hard enough never mind trying to turn it into a camera and so far as music is concerned, I have a cd player that I can manage to switch on and off. The simpler the better for me, who needs the complications. I think you might like the picture with this posting, it sums it up nicely.

Thanks for your response. Technology is really upgrading everything too fast in my estimation, and I think we find reading the book that comes with it is so confusing, I prefer if I can, be shown and I remember it a lot easier. I worked in a job at night and was sole charge so if anything went wrong I had to fix it, that ranged from computer, pabx system, fax machine, typwriter, you name it we had it, the book was never to be found from the day these things arrived, so everybody always got me to fix them, I can only suppose this was so because I had to teach myself at nights when no one was around to help, and no books to get information from.

Ok, I'm among the 'not so young' and am amazed with myself concidering 10 years ago I didn't know how to turn a computer on. For the last 8 years I've been working with computers including in the tech department of our local school district. I suppose the funniest story was when I had the old computer my older son gave me when he got "a real computer". He taught me how to turn it on and do simple things like typing letters in document program. One day I got one of those free discs from AOL and decided I was going to get internet on my own. I spent hours installing the program and getting it all set up. Just as that finished I started thinking opps I need to connect the phone line. Pulled out the computer and searched and searched for a spot to 'plug in' the line... LOL the dinosaur as referred to the old computer had no modem which meant - no internet :( My son got a big laugh out of it.

I was given an old computer a few years ago when I had to finish work it went when it felt like it and got me really frustrated, so I brought myself a brand new one with all the whistles and bells, my girlfriend came and installed it on the net for me, she was only on line for about a minute and it got a virus, well panic stations, what to do, I returned it to the dealer and he fixed it, supposedly, but it has never gone properly ever since, and now it also frustrates me because of dialup it is really slow to do all the things I want to online. I think you do really well with all your discussions you load each day. All the best and thanks for the response, keep up the great work and get some more of that technogoly into your head while you can.
