Can you believe that. Earlier I recieved a call from my 16 year old daughters assistant principal to tell me that my daughter was cought with cigarettes in her posession and therefore I will be being fined 192.50
I realize that she shouldn't have had them but 192 bucks are these people crazy. Come on if it were't for smoking in school we wouldn't have classics like, "smokin in the boys room." But seriously that is just rediculous. So first thing tomorrow I will be at that school making sure that to get her working papers and guess who is getting a job and in a hurry.
And Furthermore guess where her paychecks will be going, That's right you guessed it.

I'm sorry to hear the fine was so high, but I do think there should be a fine for smoking. Maybe kids will think twice if they themselves have to pay it off so I think it's great that you are making her foot the bill for something she did wrong. There are probably lots of parents who would pay the bill for them and that doesn't teach them anything. You are a very good parent for making her responsible.

The school sends a report to the courts and then you appear and the fine is then ordered buit from what I get from others in this area (as we have only been here a couple of years) The court will absolutely give you the fine. Seems like an unreasonable amount if you ask me. But then It seems to me this town is just out to make money. Hell they charged me 125.00 to get MY car back after it was stolen.

I have to agree with some of the others. I have never heard of the schools "fining" either the student or the parents when the student breaks the rules. Detention, suspension, calling the parents - these I have all heard of. If school property was damaged, the parents got a bill, not a fine.
Personally, I wouldn't pay it until I saw it in writing. The "assitant principal" may be running a scam.

I don't know where you got the idea that I was taking her out of school. Absolutely not , My issue is with the mount of the fine. While I think that is kind of excessive. It is her cross to bear now.

i think the amount is way to high. i remember when i got caught it was detention, licks, and sometimes sent home. i agree she should pay for it but the price is alittle high. here if a parent in a car gets caught smoking on property while waiting for there kid they get a ticket. if you smoke while driving in a school zone you can get a ticket. if you smoke in the car with a kid under 5 you get a ticket. i would be concerned on where she got them if you dont know she smokes. if you know then that is diffent. i would be at the school though finding out what hat that they picked that amount out of.

Yea i know and i think its totally rediculous that parents are being fined for what kids are doing..And i do agree that children deff need punished for smoking and things like that..but i think that the kids need to do some kind of comunity service for there punishment..most parents dont know there children are sneaking around and smoking..so why should they be punished?? So make the kids clean up garbage places..cut school ground grass..things like that..this si what i think they should be doing..what do you guys think?

Good points, besides it seems that kids today don't know the value of hard work anyway. Thanks for responding.

hey....r they people in their senses.... $192.50 isnt I small figure I suppose!!! atleast if I think of the curency conversions then definitely it is going to be really big....in Indian rupee it means around 8500 rupeee...and we have a burger here at mcdonalds for a 20 bucks or a coke pet jar for another 20 bucks.... a cigerette fine for 8500 bucks...rathgr a stupidity....
I suppose that it is necessarily important for schools to be more strict now with the more interveneing technology, accessible stuff and pre matured maturity amongst tudents that maintain a vigil they got to do certain things....
but then too there must be a limit for everything.... they may charge a smaller amount, may go for a detention...for a talk with the parents...or any other form of viable punishmnet...but this is a way of earning additional money for the schoool I suppose...

My wife tells me that schools can assess fines, but to me that doesn't seem right.
I thought fines were assessed by the legal system and courts, not by schools.
I would be checking on that.

GAWD I hate the school system. I'd take my kid out of school and now. Do NOT pay that effing fine...she's your kid she doesn't belong to the school. Home school, but take her out of public school.

While I see you point and do think this is rediculous. The public schools in our district are excellent.

I think fineing you for your daughter haveing smokes at school is crazy shoudl be like the old days and give her detention and extra work that should be done.
I would not pay it myself casue she was only holding them not smoking them what ever happend to innocent till proven guilty. I would not help her with the habit either if she feel sshe old enough to smoke then she old enough to buy her own stuff. Good job getting her a job to pay the fine too.

I do not support her habit. I tried on many occasions to make her quit but to no avail so I permit it as far as she is outside. Thanks, but I surely have no intention of paying this fine.

I guess it will be going to the principal's own hands. You know the people now are getting crazy when it comes to money. But it already happened so you can't do anything about it. I think the best thing you can do now is to discipline your daughter a little bit about her addiction to smoking but don't hurt her because that will make her a rebel. We all know that smoking is bad especially to young children like your daughter so you must act now before it's too late.

In the state of Florida, it is a 25 dollar fine to the parent if a kid is caught SMOKING. They don't do anything if you have them in your possession, except ask you where you got them. At least this is my experience. And that is at a government level. A $192 fine issued by a school?? That seems insane to me.
Honestly, things like this are the reasons kids exhibit these behaviors anyway. I started smoking because I knew i was not supposed to. I started doing a lot of things for the same reason. If so much stigma were not placed on why it is wrong to do this, rather than actually sitting down with your kids and discussing it, less would be so likely to do so.

Wow thats crazy. I dont think they do that here in the schools in Canada but hey that might be a good way to get parents to kind keep a closer eye on what there kids are doing. Im not saying you dont know what your daughter is up to because mine is alittle sneaky when it comes to smoking to but 192.50 just being caught in possesion is nuts. I can see if she got caught smoking on school property but again nuts. Oh well I guess you got the right idea by putting her to work to pay it off because that was'nt your fault or fine to deal with.

Well I think that to fine you that amount is totally outrageous. Where is this school? I think if it was me - my daughter would be finding an after school job - not to pay the gine but to hire an attorney. this school needs a reality check.

I think it is alittle harsh as she wasn't actually smoking them....though she shouldn't have had them there in the first place. I totally applaud you for making her pay for it. Though the price was alittle high - she will learn that no matter how unfair it seems the punishment is - the law is the law and you just have to follow it (or get really good at hiding your smokes) :-)
Good Luck!

i dont even really think they are supposed to charge you a fine,i think what they should of done if she was caught was suspend her and not make you pay for what she has done make her pay the price.

I think the fine is a great idea! Maybe it will disuade kids from smoking and maybe just save their lives in the process.
