OUCH!!! Why is is that the smallest injuries seem to hurt so much?

I have just had a small unfortunate accident involving the fingernail of my little finger on my right hand. I was laid on the bed with my partner when he suddently moved my arm and somehow, due to the angles we each had our arms, managed to knock it into that fingernail and now there is a tear across the middle of the nail and my nail is all bloody, not to mention throbbing in pain!
So why is it that such injuries as stubbed toe & finger nails, paper cut, shaving cuts etc hurt to darn much considering they only affect such a small part of our bodies, and are not major at all!?!? Do you find this to be true regarding small injuries and your own body?

I totally agree with you. I find paper cuts hurt me more than some of my tattoos have! Unfortunately, I'm one of these people that don't feel pain until I see the wound; and after I've seen the wound I can't forget about it and it hurts a lot more. Stubbed toes are also nasty, they make me swear like a crazy person. x

Papercuts are the worst for me. They never seem to heal and just when you think they are in that 'safe zone' something happens and they rip open again. The winter months are hand on my hands and I get those tiny little cuts near the nail that you can hardly see but get some rock salt on it, and you really do feel it!

It is because of all of the nerve endings.
It's always the fingertips that hurt the most, that's why when you do a finger stick for blood sugar levels you should aim for the side of the finger. There are less nerves on the side as opposed to the tip and finger pad.
I hope you feel better soon though, that sounds awfully painful:( I'd bandage it up for you if I could!
