Why does religion cause such a huge uproar in this forum?

Have you noticed once one person states something interesting about their religion, some have to come and start a religios debate? I think it is unnessassary. Just as long as we all believe in something, that is what matters. I do not judge by religion, do you?

"Just as long as we all believe in something"
You know, in a way, saying this is saying that religious belief is better than not having religious belief, isn't it?
I think the big reason so many people argue over religion is because some religions constantly present themselves as "better" or "right" which upsets a lot of people. It's very hard to be tolerant to someone's beliefs when they aren't being tolerant of anyone else's beliefs.
That being said, I don't judge anyone by their religion. I judge them by the way they behave. I love to discuss religion mostly because I love to learn about it, though I will argue when someone is saying something untrue about my religion (or anyone else's for that matter).

I think you misunderstood me. "Just as long as we believe in something" doesn't necassarily mean a religios something. Like what I said to Jimbo, even athiests believe in something, they believe that there is no god or goddess, heaven or hell. That is their belief so that is one of the 'something' I was talking about.

So what about agnostics who don't choose to either believe or disbelieve in a deity? *laughs*
Okay, okay, that one was too much. I had an idea what you were saying, but I was just trying to point out how any little thing could be seen as preferring one religious belief over another.
I often choose to stay out of discussions once they become too focused on "my religion is better than yours" because it just isn't interesting to me anymore. =)

I guess I don't really have much to say on agnostics. I don't even know if I've heard of them. But, you have a point, if anyone was to tell me I was evil, I would sure have something to say.

Religion causes a huge uproar everywhere, not merely on this forum. Everyone is right, everyone else is wrong. Makes no sense, I know, but people seem to look for a reason to hate and hurt others. Religion gives them the reason without feeling as much guilt.

Well, a lot of it, is because there are so many diverse people here from all over the World, and some tend to think that is you say you are certain religions, you are Evil, and maybe a Terrorist or something like that. Actually, by me reading all of the Religious discussions I have read on here in the time that I have been a member here, I have learned a lot of interesting things I may not have learned elsewhere. It is a Shame there are people who have nothing better than to Bash others.

There are so many people who are against God or who do not like to follow God for they do not believe that the Holy Bible is the word of God and it is the truth. And so when Christians talk about God, they usually ask questions not to learn but to argue and to dispute and to disregard and fight against the belief of Christians that the Holy Bible is the word of God.

I am unsure at this point as to what I believe in. Through my parents I am a muslim, but I know not much about it to be honest.
I love to learn about others religions and beliefs. I think it is fantastic of those who believe strongly in their God, whoever that may be. But I have a real problem with those people who will not listen to anything I say, who have no answer to my legitimate questions, and those who try to force me to believe their beliefs without listening to a word i say. This is why I choose to learn on my own...but I do enjoy a good and fair debate every now and then!
Just this morning I came across a post about Lilith and Adam and Eve. I have since spent the last few hours finding out all I can about Lilith, and also about who Cains wife was. Very interesting!
How can I discuss religions if i know nothing about other religions?
And I also think that the main gist of the majority of religions are all very similar, but religious people think that is not right. I think that there are just diferent versions of names, etc, because they are written in different languages.
I hope this makes sense..my brain is thinking faster than my fingers type!

It would be fine to me if somebody would talk about their religion. But when somebody condemns me for what i believe in, then I would fight back. Gnosisquest condemns all Christians, Muslims and jews. I cannot tolerate that. You are right, it is unnessessary. However unlike you, some people attact other peoples beliefs. :)

Its not just this forum...its pretty much any busy forum that has a variety of ppl...with such a large, diverse group its no wonder ppl cant get along when it comes to religion...add to that the fact that most feel their way is the only way and everyone else is wrong and their need to tell everyone else that, try to convert them, refuse to open their minds etc and you have a recipe for a bickerfest..

I'm a Christian and I enjoy talking about religion/faith as long as it stays respectful. No one has to agree with me or think the way I do.. I can still enjoy learning about their faith or religion, whatever it may be, as long as we both show respect towards each other's choices.
I do not believe that, as a Christian, my God would want me to judge anyone - that's his job, in my opinion. I also do not believe that I have the right to tell someone they are 'wrong' unless they are belittling my decision or telling me "I" am wrong for my choices. I do not know what the RIGHT choice is, when it comes to this choice. So I do what I feel is right in my heart and hope for the best. People should respect that.
I noticed the uproar on this forum but for the most part, I try to stay out of them unless I really do have an honest question about what they are discussing.
My opinion is .. Live and Let Live. When the time comes, which it will for all of us, we will find out the truth. In the meantime, just live your life in the best way possible.. be kind and I think we'll all be o.k.
