Have you ever planted popcorn?

At my old house I had a small garden. One day I thought for giggles and grin I would plant some popcorn. So I just grabbed my Orville Redenbacher's popcorn and planted the kernals instead of buying seed corn. To my surprise the kernals sprouted. I had only planted a small amount but I got about 4 cups of kernals off that popcorn crop. It was the freshest popcorn I have ever put in my mouth. So has anyone else ever planted popcorn?

I did not know that popcorn would grow. I have planted corn using seed corn. That's interesting to know. Someday I when I get a garden again I will have to try that!

No ****!? It really sprouted?! I always thought that they must have cooked it in some way, or irradiated it, or just treated it with too many chemicals. I've got to try that! Thank you for a very, very interesting an weird factoid! I've never tried that. I have grown Milk n' Honey, (the local variety of yellow and white) and Silver Queen, which turned out to be a horrid batch - we had a bad summer and it was useless. Anyone else would have used it for feed corn. I do grow a couple of stalks in late Summer so that I have some dry cornstalk to adorn my walkway in the Fall.

Don't plant regular corn and popcorn close together though. The popcorn will make the other corn tough.

my grandparent used to grow popcorn every year...it was fantastic..all us kids would help take it off the cobs and put it in jars...they grew a yellow kernel and a purple kernel...my grandma even planted peanuts one year...

Wow! I never knew that you could grow plant popcorn kernals and that they would sprout! That is a cool idea, and one that I will have to try this year.

I've planted popcorn before, but not from something I'd bought at the store. I assumed that was so specialized that it probably wouldn't grow. I agree that homegrown popcorn is much, much better than you can buy.

I was surprised it grew as good as it did.

I've never planted it but I know someone that did. The popcorn looked like corn on the cob,but it was popcorn kernels on the cob instead. I put the popcorn cob in a brown paper bag in the microwave and had microwaved popcorn on the cob. It was good. I wonder what time of the year did you plant it and when did it mature into popcorn?

I planted corn seeds before but they didn't grow like the should have because I didn't have the adequate sun. My parents just built a small garden at their house and planted corn as well. Theirs will probably grow nice, like in the fields, because they have good soil and lots of sun.
