Why does the Easter bunny carry eggs? Rabbits don't lay eggs.

My dad could never answer that question so he started telling us that it wasn't an Easter bunny, but an Easter chicken!

I'm going to take a wild guess that the eggs represent a new beginning or a birth. I have no idea where the bunny came from though.
