Belief in the Divine?

India

We all live in a pluralistic world, wherein we come across people praying to various Gods. My question to you all my friends is ... How many of you believe that God is One and that we all just name the same God as different ones? If you do believe that each God is different, please let me know which God that you pray to?

Personally I have been born into the Christian faith but I do not believe that there is one true God. I am currently in India where there are more Gods worshiped than I can count and many homes will have a number of idols placed throughout. In terms of Christianity it would be deemed as following false idols so therefore wrong. Buddhists worship at statues of Buddha which again is deemed wrong according to the Christian faith..... But is not having a statue of Jesus on a cross in a house or at a church not the same thing? There are over one billion Hindu's in the world, over one billion Buddhists; apparently the Muslim faith is one of the fastest growing religion's in the world..... Are they all wrong? The sooner society as whole accepts the differences of us all in terms of Gods and religion and just works on the goodness that can be found in their own faith's then the sooner we would all be better off.

dear james, just for your information, india is a predominantly hindu country with people worshipping about 20000 Gods. But they too have the concept of trinity like, the creator (Brahma), the pacifier (Vishnu) and the destroyer (Shiva). All the named above are gentle in their own right but do have the power to create and destroy. your answer really brings in a lot of pondering thoughts. and i really like the way you have concluded your response. mike, the lil smiley devil

I have been raised as a Hindu but I would not say I'm particularly religious. I find that religion is the cause of many of the world's problem and many of the world's worst attrocities. I want no part of that. I believe there is a God out there, not necessarily male or female, but one being who is know by different names. If people choose to worship an idol, a stone, a man on a cross, they it is totally up to them. My God is someone who understands everyone's needs and meets those needs in differing ways. As long as I live my life doing the best I can for myself and for others and not hurting anyone else along the way, I believe I will not be considered a bad person by those around me. I am not recognised by my faith but how I behave whilst I am alive. God is there to give us spiritual guidance when we most need it and I don't have to visit a temple or church or other religious place of worship to show I believe in God, I pray in my own time and in private. God, if You're reading this, remind all of us down here that You are just One being and You can't meet everyone's needs and whims, tell them all to be patient and that You'll get around to them all eventually :)

I believe that there is only one God. The God's that people worship were created by people because they need an image of the Supreme Being and they need it. God approach people in different cases, He can send a prophet to shout his rules, words, love and warnings, in Hinduism, Buddha represented him to blend with the culture of the Indians and eventually the Chinese. God is everywhere and His ways are mysterious and don't bother to ask why because it remains a mystery. Who I worship?, I worship the God who created the universe, who created you and me. I love Him for I know that His justice prevails and if you are down and people drag you down, He'll be down there to catch you and if you say sorry for all your sins, He is thy father who will hug and love you and prepare a banquet for you and forgive you, we are all His prodigal children, His lost sheeps, and it is up to us to show what He means to us and how we can respond to His calling.
