Life in Prison or the Death Penalty?

Being that tax payers pay for people who are incarcerated, what would you prefer? Paying $750,000 dollars for a 40 year sentence to life or paying between 2.8 - 3.8 million dollars for a capital murder trial and death sentence? In California alone it costs California 90 million dollars annually for the death penalty and 78 million of the that is at trial level.
