Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has taken it upon herself to go to Syria to have "talks" with Syrian President Bashar Asad, as well as others.
Rep. Pelosi is a US Housemember and Speaker of the House. Therefore her job is to represent the people of the 8th Congressional District (The San Francisco Area), and the House of Representatives.
She is 3rd in line of succession to the president. That means that if the President and VP are incapacitated, the role of president goes to her.
All these being facts, what part of her job, the rules and bylaws of the House of Representatives or the US Constitution authorize her to speak for the US? What part of her job allows her to spend taxpayer funds on activities that aren't her job?
So my challenge to any of her supporters is:Please explain to me how her actions are legal, ethical or even Constitutional?

I wish you luck in this endeavor.
I think it highly unlikely that you will find anyone that can show how Pelosi's actions are legal, ethical or Constitutional.

I am a supporter of Pelosi and I am very glad she has gone to another country to try to mend our negotiations with them. I can not get too upset about her spending tax payers money in the wrong way. That could be a whole new discussion. When does anyone in Washington spend our money the way we think it should be spent? I have not read or seen much about Pelosi going to Syria so I am not basing my discussion on what the media wants me to know and what the President has to say about her going.
I look at it like this, she is going to Syria to try to help the US look better than we have in the past. I feel the President of this country has fallen short on diplomatic negotiations and he has also tainted us throughout the world. It is a good thing that some representative took it upon themselves to show the world another side of the US. We are not all Republicans with a hard heart like Bush. We can be diplomatic and compassionate. I am sure Pelosi is still doing her job as a representative for her district, while taking on another important role for the whole of the US. I also believe there is a possiblity that this was approved by our government, but they do not want it to be said that they approved in case things go astray. If the negotiations or talks turn out bad Bush has his out by saying he did not approve of her going. If the talks go great for us, Bush will accept the glory, it is the way politics are played. Trust me if President Bush or any other higher power did not want Pelosi to go she would not have been able to go. There is always MUCH more involed than what the media allows us to know.

But how do you reconcile her actions with the Constitution's Seperation of Powers? The Constitution is very clear about the roles of Housemembers and the Executive Branch.
Also, I have to ask, if it was a House Speaker you didn't support, with a President you liked, would you feel the same way?
If the Constitution is only important to us when it fits our agenda, it is worthless.

i think the only reason anyone thinks this was unethical or illegal is because Bush didn't want her to go. Nancy Pelosi is not the only member of the House over there, but there is no issue being made over that. Nobody has said she is going over there to try to strike a deal with the Syrians. As Speaker she has a right to debate issues and serve on foreign relations committees. Maybe she is trying to get a better understanding of the position Syria is holding, and sttempt to explain our position to them. nobody was inflamed when Hillary went to Iraq to meet with officials, or Pakistan for that matter. If it were illegal, unconstitutional or unethical I don't think she would jeopardize her career to go. How can you represent your constituents without a real understanding of situations? I think above all her trip may have been to educate herself so she can serve the country better. Maybe if Bush tried this he wouldn't have the issues he does.

That is why I started this discussion, to seperate the "they shouldn't because Prs. Bush doesn't want them to" from the "they shouldn't because they have no authority to".
Prs. Bush doesn't want congress to cut funding for the war either, but if they do, it is completely within their authority to do so.
You are right, it is more than just Pelosi and there are both democrats and republicans over in Syria. I don't care what their excuse is or what letter comes after their names. They are neglecting their actual responsibilities and duties and misusing government funds to make this trip.
You are right, if this trip was about fact finding or gaining first hand information into some of the issues being debated, that would be part of their duties, however, by their own statements, that isn't what they are doing. Pelosi said that she will convey a message from Israel to Syria and conduct "peace talks". These are far from "Fact finding" goals... they also aren't her job, nor are they the job of any US House member.
She has already proven that she doesn't care about ethics, offering pork benefits to Housemembers who side with her with their votes... or is vote buying now an ethical thing... especially for a house speaker who promised to end pork projects and earmarks?
You never did take up my challenge, but I do thank you for your comments.

Admittedly it was a difficult challenge to take up. After your post yeasterday I watched the news on this topic when my kids went to bed and the house was quiet. I have to say, after getting more educated on the topic I have to agree that she (and the other delegates) should not have gone. Pelosi looked awkward, uncomfortable and just by her body language it made me wonder what the motives are behind this trip. If the Syrians want to start the peace process they need to step up to the plate an doffer to do do so, we cannot force them into it, and it looks as though all their previous remarks about wanting peace were futile. It is a waste of taxpayers money. Thank you for the topic, and for making me stop to really look at the situation.

and thank you for taking the time to dig a little deeper to find out for yourself. All too often we make a snap decision, then our egos don't allow us to look any further.
