Forgot to buy candy for Halloween

I am not Christian and so we do not have Halloween. But people in the neighborhood celebrate Halloween. I asked someone what is done during the Halloween and she explained to me what to do. But when the day arrived, I forgot to buy candy. All the neighborhood kids came that evening for trick or treat at our door. I peeped through the eyehole and since I had no candy, I simply did not open the door. I felt terribly bad about this. What should I do during such awkward situations? Should I have opened the door and said "sorry"? Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

I don't think the Christians celebrate Halloween anyway, something to do with it being Evil - don't quote me on that but i'm pretty sure it's a Pagan holiday or something! We don't celebrate Halloween at all in Australia but someone allowed their 3 kids to trick or treat & i had nothing for them either. I think i just didn't bother with it because since we don't celebrate it, there's never been anyone come to the door. I might make sure i have something small for this coming one though, just in case someone here decides to let their kids go door knocking again! I think you did the right thing though so don't worry about it - maybe you could just buy stuff early this year & have it in your cupboards in advance for the coming one! Good Luck!

No I think what you did was fine, out here the general rule of thumb is, if you have candy to give you turn on your outside light. If the light is off you dont bother going to the house, that means the person is out of candy or doesnt give out. I wouldn't have opened the door though, what you did was right!
