Can anybody help me with lawn care?

I bought a new house. There was no grass when we moved in. It was winter at that time. Now it is spring. We are seeing little greens raising their heads. It doesn't look that good. How do I grow a lush, green, velvetty, soft grassy lawn? Also, how do I control the weeds? They are everywhere and are very ugly and stiff.
Please help.

Instead of typing it all out here, I'll just give you the link to a great website that can take you step by step in growing a new lawn. www.lawncare.com If you have a large yard- 1 acre or more, you might be better off having a lawn care company coming out and doing it for you.
