Mashed fingers.

Did you ever mash your child's fingers in a car door? I mean actually slam the door yourself? I did once, and I hated it. A tip I used later, when doing child care, and then when I had small children riding with me for other reasons. When getting out of the car, if you have to go around and help several kids out, ask the ones that are out to "Hold the car still for me", and have them place their hands in a safe place out of the way on the car. Two results: No fingers in the door, and the kids are not running everywhere, but are waiting for you to have everyone out, and holding the car still, so you are all safe. LOL. Hope this works for someone.

MY ex did that to my son, it was Thanksgiving morning. He slammed his fingers in the car door, I took my son to the hospital while the Turkey cooked, the ex stayed home to watch football. A few years later, my son slammed his own hand in the trunk, it was almost funny, he was 9 or 10, and we were talking and he very calm said Mom, get the keys, I did not pay any attention, again, in a normal voice, Mom, get the keys. Again I did nothing. Then MOM, GET THE KEYS NOW! I turn around and there he is standing, his hand in the trunk with the lid down, I ran in the house got the keys and got him out. Nothing was broken this time, other then his ego. He could not believe he did that to himself!

Son slammed and locked his finger in a car door at about seven years old. Refused to miss any school over it. We went on his school lunch hour to have the nail punctured.

I hear you on that..if that was my son, he would willingly have missed school, but he played hockey on several occasions with broken fingers.

Oh my! I never did it with the car door but I did get my son's fingers stuck in the door space by the hinges. I didn't know his little fingers were there and I moved the door causing him to scream in pain. Of course I totally panic and in a nervous wreck I couldn't think clear enough to figure out which way I needed to move the door to release his fingers. I actually made it worse but he ended up fine. No bruise and no broken fingers! Thank God!

No I never mashed my child's fingers in a car door, but I did it to myself when I was young it was very painful. I always told my children and other children that I had with me to be careful of the car door so that they would not hurt themselves as I did not want them to experience what it was like when I did this to myself.

oh yes, it did happened once with my eldest girl. My youngest one accidentally slammed the bedroom door and kind of mashed my eldest fingers. She kept crying and I was left feeling weak. I hated seeing my girl hurt this way. Its like my fingers are mashed too. I need to keep reminding my girls to be careful the next time. :)

I once slammed my own fingers in a car door and i screamed like a child. I'm not sure that counts but I'm sure it was funnier for anyone watching than it was for me.

I managed to slam the index finger of my right hand in a van door driver's side. I never did figure out how I did that,as I was closing it with my right hand. LOL. I am very talented.

I once had my fingers almost mashed. I was trying to get into my aunt's van as my mother closed the door. I fortunately have small fingers and I had a ring on that finger so my fingers were OK.

That is kind of a sweet memory, a family joke, so to speak. Sorry you have lost her, but I trust you will see her in heaven.

I never accidently mashed any kids fingers in the car, but I had this happen to me when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My brother slammed the car door and both of my hands got slammed in it. (I've had arthritis in both of them for many years that I attribute to that incident.) So, with any kids that are getting into my car, after buckling them up I make them keep their hands on their lap where I can see them before I shut the door. If they're getting out, I have them stand to the left of the car door and stand between them and the car door (where I can still see them) while I shut it. I bet you felt horrible when that happened! It's unfortunate, but don't be too rough on yourself, that's why they call accidents 'accidents.'

Well, it was twenty eight years ago, and I believe he harbors no ill will to this day. Yes, I felt horrible, especially as I had a two door car, he had just crawled in behind me, and as I pulled the door and started the momentum of the slam, a little voice in my head said,"You probably got his fingers", and I did, but it was too late to stop it. Luckily that particular car model had lots of squishy rubber around it, and his two year old fingers were small. They were sore, but did not even turn black.

When I was about 8 years old we were getting in the car and my father told me to shut the door. I grab the handle and shut it, the problem was my father had his fingers where they got mashed. He only ever spanked me twice when I was growing up and never when I really deserved it. I got spanked that day from him. I didn't mean to mash his fingers he told me to shut the door of the car, he acutally told me to "close the damn car door." the second time he spanked me I lost my balance and fell through the living room window. Thankfully I wasn't cut. I was spanked, then he asked if I was bleeding anywhere.

Too bad his temper got the best of him over accidents. You probably remember the spankings at least as much as the accidents themselves.

Yes, I do and as an adult when I think back on it I would have rather him spanked me, because I did something wrong, not over accidents.

We hold on to those memories, and we can use them as the "best bad examples" of how to deal with our own children. Hang on to the good things you remember, as well.

Yes, it has happend to us as well. My little neice a few years ago, I will never forget and neither will she. We were getting out at the local bread bakery thrift store and she got out and was in a hurry and slammed the door on her finger before I could stop her. She cried and cried and broke my heart. She later lost that fingernail. Now she is more careful. I like your suggestion, that is very helpful and sounds like it works too.

No thank heavens, but my brother got his toe smashed so badly, that today as an adult the toe is scarred. I'm sure someone will benefit from your tip.

I make sure that before my daugthers comes out from the car i am there to help them open the door and let them in or out. But one time, my eldest daugther open the door of our car immediately and causes her to mashed her pointed finger. She cried and cried. I just hug her and told her not to open and close the door of the car by herself because she is still a baby.

Well, I mashed my mother in laws finger in the trunk. My sister mashed her son's finger in the door, and he lost the tip of his finger.

Wish I had this tip many years ago when my kids were little. Thankfully they all managed to keep their fingers in tact! I can remember them screaming and seeing their fingers lodged in the door. My stomach still turns over it.

I haven't mashed anyone's fingers yet... Although I did get my toe slammed over by the door before. One of my toes still has a smaller toe nail compared to the rest. I remember the door took the nail clean right off. That was extremely painful at the age of six. This is helpful advice and I will definately use it the next time I'm in a car full of little kids.
