Do grocery store baggers have brains? I mean seriously...

Today when I got home I found my bread tucked neatly in a brown paper bag on top of my lettuce and under my WATERMELON! I mean come on....do people have brains at all? What's the dumbest thing you have witnessed a bagger do? Do you confront them when you see it or do you keep quiet?

You know, I put my groceries on the conveyer belt in category group. The meats together, the produce together, all boxes together, dairy, cans & jars, bread & eggs... and they still manage to stick a jar of jam in a bag with a loaf of bread. I would think they would appreciate that I take care to put things together like that but they turn around and mess it all up.
I have never, EVER been a grocery cashier or bagger but I have the common sense to know which things should be bagged together. Do the grocery stores not train their employees anymore? Not that I think anyone needs to be trained to know not to put the meat in with the shampoo. I think the only thing they know is to tell you where your eggs are, and they still pile something on top of them.
I don't say anything to them but if I have my kids with me I say aloud "All the boxes together, all the dairy together..." loud enough for the cashier to hear. Obviously she doesn't listen. I had one occasion and one occasion only when a cashier actually thanked me for categorizing my items.

In the bagger's defense...
Put yourself in that bagger's place. Would you REALLY care about your job if you were getting paid dirt and had to deal with people all day? I'm sure there are days that they just simply don't care. It is rather backwards of them to crush your delicate items, but they may just be at wits end.
To agree with you, there are a lot of people who get jobs as bagger simply because that's all they're capable of doing. The Kroger store by me has a lot of mentally and physically challenged people that work as baggers, greeters, or cart return. Don't get me wrong, some of them are the nicest you'd ever meet, and I would stand up to anyone who talked down to any of them. Sometimes it just happens. It's not always something that they're paying attention to. There's more focus on making sure everything gets bagged than what gets put on top of what.
Rather than confront someone for it, I usually try to give em a hand, at least with the stuff that I don't want getting smooshed.

Oh I hear ya. I was a bagger back in the day. It is not a fun job nor does it pay enough to make it worthwhile. Like today, I had a HUGE order, two heaping carts full so of course she was in a hurry so I cut her some slack. I usually make a point of asking for what I want up front and ask that bags are not filled too heavy or whatever. I just didnt bother today and my bread got smooshed! Just thought it would be a good topic :)

I have seen some strange things, I had one laady talking on her phone well packing my groceries I asked her to step aside and she got pissed off and started throwing my items into the bags. SO I called over the manager, no help in that departmartment there either so I left them holding the bag and the mess but keeping my money. I also have had a young kid 16+ paking my bag and he put the milk ontop of the eggs and put the cleaning products ontop of the meats and bread.

When I see them put bread in with my soup cans, I take out the bread and ask the bagger to go get me a new loaf. I am not mean about it or treat them like they are stupid. I just make it a point to not go home with squished bread. The next time they see me they stick the bread in the bag by itself. I don't care if they like me or say stuff about me. I just want a loaf of bread to be in good shape when I get home, and I do the same thing when it comes to bags of chips or anything else that can get crushed. So far I haven't had anyone look at me like I am a jerk. So I am hoping that I am tactful in the way I get my point across. If not, at least I don't have squished bread.

I am exactly the same way. I watch closely when I go through the checkouts. I have just seen too many things that make me wonder why they have a job doing what they are doing. I am not rude either when I say something, but I do say something. I think the point needs to be made and heck, we are paying for the groceries, I expect them to be in the shape I bought them in when I get home. I totally agree!

I think most people do not know what happened until they get home and by then it is too late. The damage is already done.
The best way is to tell them before they even start bagging your groceries, that you want your bread in a separate bag.

You're right and that is exactly what I usually do. However today my order was two heaping cart fulls so all I did was ask that the bags not be too full, didnt even think about the bread. She was very busy trying to keep up, I can understand how it happened, but sometimes I just wonder. Oh well, life goes on. :)

i didn't have to let him have it.
the eggs shattered as soon as he let go of the turkey.that had to be at least one of the top dumbest i'd seen them do.

I know what you mean!! So far I have been fortunate not to have this happen to me. but it has happened to my mother before. Were I to witness it happening, I would definitely say something to the bagger, and have them fix the problem before something got ruined.
