Colic

Noah is crying a lot - This is Noah, he is 8 weeks old and has decided it would be a great idea to start crying at night. We can't seem to get him comfortable.

My baby is starting to cry a lot at night, and he has gas a lot. Does this mean he is colicky or could it be something else?

It may be caused by the foods that he is eating that is causing the gas in his stomach which often caused cramps and therefore, the baby will cry. If the crying stops after just a short time, or when you move him, or suddle him then it is not colic. True colic means hours of crying with the child's legs drawn up into their stomach often; nothing seems to apease them.....my daughter had colic...my grandmother told me to find some "catnip" and boil it into a weak tea (add some sugar, cause it is bitter) and give her 4 ounces or so when she felt like that...it seemed to help her rest. I have also tried chamimelle tea with fairly good results, as it has a nature calming effect. Good luck with this and if you are really concerned...call your pediatrician and discuss it with them.

Thanks, it must just be some bad bouts with gas that are getting him. He is only upset for about an hour at most...thank god for gas drops :)

He probably has gas...And he's probably just wanting to be held...you can try this, it worked for me... Take a recieving blanket, put it in the dryer for about 20 minutes. Then take it out (you have to do this quickly) and fold in in half, then fold it over again so it's long and skinny. Wrap your baby's belly in it, and wrap it TIGHT, not too tight, but tight. Wrap him in another the regular way, pretty snug and he should go right to sleep without you having to hold him... If that doesn't work, I put my daughter on her belly across my knees and would bounce my legs gently and pat from the top of her back to her bottom then back up again...somehow it makes them burp A LOT! Good luck! I hope one or both of those work for you! Congrats on the new baby!

Probably he is crying a lot because of the gas. I really noticed based on experience that if the baby is always on pacifier (that means lots of sucking just air), the baby will always gets gas and they will have this discomfort especially at bed time. Also dressing the baby appropriately especially if you have cold weather or you like your house on low temp all the time. I am just lucky that my baby didn't suffer any of these because I make sure she wears socks during cold weather plus she is always on her pajamas with the booties on it if she sleeps at night. Just check what possible things that gave your child gas so you can eliminate it and he will has a restful sleep.

Gas can be painful, so they do cry a lot. Have you tried gripe water? This is the brand I used, this is a link for a store locator to see if you can buy it near you http://www.blissbymom.com/StoreLocator.aspx I swear by that stuff! Also try pumping his legs, like he's riding a bike. There's also a type of massage you can do, I forgot how it's been so long. Good luck!
