This is something that will require more information from you. There is a picture of my first flower bed in my profile. I can give tips. Don't plant in rows. It isn't corn and it looks dumb. Nothing is maintenance free. If you filled the whole yard with concrete it will still require maintenance. DON'T use black plastic to keep out weeds. You will destroy your soil. Don't be lazy. Pull the weeds. Plant what you like and work in your flower bed. I started a landscaping company to maintain and design flower beds so if you have questions feel free to ask.
