15 cent per plastic bags

Our shops introduced a 15c levy for plastic bags ( an EU incentive for waste management as far as I know, Our Government may have introduced it?? I'm not too sure), But any way, It's great to see the use of plastic bags dropping, anything to help the environment, but most of the time shops here don't supply (or run out of) brown bags to carry your good home. What do you do in this situation?? Do you juggle your groceries out to the car or just leave and get your bits and pieces some where else?

I always pick brown bags over the plastic. I have had the plastic bags break on me from the car to the house so many times. Even double bagged. Once you have a plastic bag break and a heavy can fall on your toes you will go back to paper too. I am all for saving the environment but not at the expense of my feet. I would not pay for them. If they did that here I would take my own bag to take my groceries home in. Or not go back to that store. Good Luck and watch your feet.

Paper bags are ok if you are carrying them straight to your car, if you are walking about town for any length of time then paper bags will burst, unless you get reinforced paper bags with handles (much less environmentally friendly), you should encourage stores to get biodegradeable plastic which is more suitable than paper, plastic bags (unless very thin) can take a stronger weight than paper.

I do use reusable bags nearly all of the time, But tonight I walked to the shop to buy just a paper, but decided to pick up some bits for the kids and they couldn't supply me with a paper bag, It really annoyed me.

That is not good could be frustrating and a big inconvienence You would think stores woudl keep a few on hand to sell.

15 cents? Mann I wish bags were that cheap here in Denmark. I always have to pay at least 50 cents for a bag, and I can't chose paper... Since I don't want to bring my own bag (that just looks stupid), I'm forced to paying the insane bag prices.

Was that a waste incentive for Denmark too?? You'd think they would supply paper bags, Only problem here being the rain lol, paper just doesn't stand up to it.

I visited Ireland a few years ago, and was given paper bags to carrry some goods and the bags promptly ripped. Some environmentalist do not approve of paper bags as they are disposed of by burning which adds to the carbon content of air, they also mean destroying trees which help remove Carbon Dioxide from the air. There are now many biodegradable plastic bags which are now environmentallly friendly, these are more re-usable than paper bags and will in the long run be better than paper bags

I have reusable carrier bags and try to use them when I remember but we recyle our carrier bags anyway! I think that shops should provide the boxes that their items come out of for people to carry their groceries home or to go to the car with! This used to happen in some stores years ago but i haven't seen it done for a while - surely this makes sense - instead of the shop putting the box directly into a crusher or waste then the customer can use and recycle it saving the use of carrier bags!

This is not yet introduced in my country (plastic bags are usually free to go, and if you already have to pay for them, it's practically nothing), but we have a levy for plastic bottles that's about less than 10 cents per bottle...could be more, but this action has been successful so far, it's all about saving the environment no matter how low actual refunds are :)

That is so cool! That is a great idea! We always have so many bags, and there is a recycle bin at the grocery store, but don't pay for them. There aren't anymore places that offer that selection. Sometimes, if i'm just running in and out, I take my tote bag! I love it. My daughter helped me decorate it, and it says, "Groceries Only" on it! Plus the cashier always asks about it, like if i was stealing it! lol. Try it out!

It's 10C a bag here at a store called Aldis and plastic is all they have for us. I don't really mind much. I never been in a store where they ran out of bags though, they always had something for us to carry our goods out in.

I brings my own bags sometimes. It costs I think 15 cent in this one grocery store to buy any bags. This sounds good what your store is doing

Wow... 15 cents??? That's crazy.. lol.. The grocery stores here don't charge anything but I can think of one major store in the next town over that you pay 2 cents per bag. They also make you pack the groceries into the bag yourself. When I do manage to get out there to do a bit of shopping, I normally bring the cloth bags that I have here to put stuff into. They are easier to carry around with me.

I think that is a wonderful idea. I have tons of reusable bags that I could take with me, but I don't because when they are provided free you don't think about it. It would also keep me from impulse buying because I am too cheap to pay for the extra bags.

I have a larget stash of canvas bags. I also have the really big ones from Lidl, as well as a few left over from when they first introduced the levy and they were sort of water prrof. I suppose they were intended for frozen food? If I forget a bag, and I can't manage to carry the stuff in my hands, I will break down and buy one of the plastic bags. They are always good for when the kids need a lunch bag for school outings or what have you, so they do get more then one use, at least.

I always use plastic bags, because this is what the store supplies, but I do not feel too bad about it, because we recycle these bags as diaper bags. I wish, my store had an incentive such as your for reusing the bags. When I lived in New Jerse they did this, but not here in Florida. At least not what I know off.

I'm surprised that they're doing that. In the US, the bags are free. There is a store called Save-a-Lot that charges you money for every bag you take. Its 3 cents for a plastic one thats small, and 10 cents for a larger one that's heavy duty. Some people only buy a few things when they go to that store, so they carry their items out. I prefer buying the bags since I get a month's groceries at a time. I've noticed very few stores giving us the option to bring our own bags. I think they don't let us most of the time because of the fear of theft. Too bad for the enviorment.

Here if I shop only two items or less then no plastic bag is allowed except under some circumstances. Well I think it's good to see that we are care about environment and trying to cut back the resources so it will last longer.

We don't have this in Canada yet. Some towns and cities have started doing this, and there are a few stores that charge 3 cents per bag, but it's a slow progress here. I have canvas bags that we're going to use. (We don't use them now because we use the plastic grocery bags as garbage bags).
