Have you ever made, rode, or seen a great float in a parade?

Parade float - This is our Happy birthday float. As I said it is hard to tell what it is with so many girls and no lights.

Have you ever made, rode, or seen a great float in a parade? As a Girl Scout leader, I have been in a few parades. We have even done a few floats. Our last one a Christmas was a flop!! It was a good idea, but to many girls wanting to be on the float, as well as lighting problems did us in. The theme was Happy Birthday Jesus, and We did the float to look like a Birth day party. We did not use any thing Christmas, and everything Birthday. We had a giant blow-up cake, a banner, noise makers, balloons, hats, the whole nine yards! the girls even sang "Happy Birthday" the whole way. It was good, but it was not lit up because the generator would not work. So no one saw what it was, and it kinda looked like a bunch of kids on a trailer!LOL The one before that we were in a parade for our towns 100 year celebration. We had some of the girls dress in old uniforms. We ahd them from the 20' all the way up to todays 'uniform' of jeans, an area t-shirt and a vest. It was very good. The towns people liked it as well as we did. We made large blow-ups of the town from years gone by and included some of the 50 year parade as well as some area landmarks, and people. It was great!Have you ever made a float for a parade? Have you ever rode on a parade float? Maybe you remember a great float from a parade that you watched, you can tell us about that too.

I grew up in a small town and every year the football team and cheerleaders where in a parade. I was a cheerleader and in the parade every year for 4 years. It was usually just decorated in our school colors and team mascot. Nothing really fancy. My son was just in a parade for opening day celebration of the baseball season. We had it decorated in baseballs, bats and gloves. It looked cute. The boys were all on it dressed in their uniforms and throwing candy to the crowd.

I hate that you have never been to one. We have them for all kinds of things here in the US. It is a lot of fun for the kids. They love to be in them and it makes them feel important.

Yes, I've designed and been the chief organiser of a number of floats. The last one we made was really good. The theme was "Family". We built a Church on a trailer. It was all made of thick cardboard, but really looked like bricks. It had a steeple with a bell and we had recorded bells peeling. It had stained glass windows and a door. People even looked inside expecting to see pews - but there weren't any. Inside the Church were two men who lowered the steeple every time we went under electric wires and then raised it again. Another year we had a gigantic open Bible with the pages printed. It was so real looking that people asked us is every page was printed!Apart from floats for processions, we have also made huge props for camps, including a full size Cobb & Co coach, a Viking ship, a cave with dinosaurs and the inn where Ned Kelly was captured. I've tried to upload a photo but it wouldn't. I'll post this and try again.

Church float - Church built on a trailer for a float procession
Thanks for the best response. I'm trying again to upload a photo of the Church float. I have just successfully loaded it into my pictures, so it should load this time. Yes! It worked. There is also one of the Cobb & Co coach on my pictures.

The lodge we meet in - The Boy Scouts did a copy of this building for the parade and won first place.
WOW I may call you to come down to help next year! The boy scouts won with a likeness of the Scout Lodge this year. Our town is redoing the lodge, and it really did look just like it, only smaller. I will try to post a photo of the lodge, I don't have one of the float.

At least you gave the Christmas float a good try! I have only seen floats, and have never been in them. That's probably good, because I know I would screw something up. LOL

Sounds like you have had a blast working with your scouts! I worked on a float with the local childcare association. It was great. I ended up walking the entire parade and was bone tired at the end of the day. My daughter roller skated, my son's rode the float. My older daughter walked with us too and tossed out candy.

i used to have participated actively in decorating floats while i was still a student. nowadays, i see them big, beautiful and gorgeous ones during parades here in davao city, philippines where i reside. during my childhood, i never thought that floats can be so elaborate and that people will be willing to spend so much money just to make them so wonderful. those floats will only get to be appreciate for a maximum time of a day.

We try to not spend too much on ours. I think we spent about $20 to make ours this year. Half of the money went to things we can reuse over and over, so only about $10 on things we could not re-use.
