Don Imus

In an on-air discussion of the women's NCAA basketball championship, American radio personality Don Imus called members of the Rutgers team "nappy-headed ho's". He later apologized and called the remark an ill-conceived attempt at humor.
As a white male, I am apalled at the remarks and will be even more apalled if Imus is not fired outright. This kind of remark has no place on our airwaves, apology or not.

I am horrified that this kind of stuff goes on so often and nothing is really done about it. An apology is only issued because he got caught. It's time people wake up and take a stand. I am a white male also and am sick and tired of hearing "jokes" like this. I decided years ago to call people out on their comments. If I hear people say things like that, or other racist comments, I point it out to everyone I can right then and there...I do embarrass them...and I don't care anymore. They speak their mind so quickly, I let their voice be heard. It's amazing how many quickly clam up and are ashamed. It's even more amazing how many are so stupid that they keep talking, not realizing how much of a bigot they truly are. I have lost some "friends" this way, but I have gained many more true friends.

Bravo for you. More people should have the courage of their convictions.

Frankly I do not know the meaning behind the "nappy-headed ho's" It must be quite a sensitive word at the way you have expressed yourself.
Words hurled at other races, culture, religions should not be tolerated and when in the air one should be very selective in their words

"Nappy-headed" is supposedly in reference to the unique hair qualities of many people of African descent. "Ho" is street slang for "wh*re". Thanks for your comments.

I quit listening to Don Imus years ago. I quit because he is very rude, obnoxious, and ill mannered in general. It is a waste of time for anyone to listen to Don Imus.
Do you get me? The man is a degenerate who demeans radio and himself everytime he goes on the air.
That said, I would not fire him. Let people do what I have done. Don't listen to him.
What? Didn't he say racists things about blacks? Well, yes he did. So, what?
Don Imus is an equal opportunity bigot who slanders and makes fun of all races.
I got offended at him for his inappropiate remarks, in general, towards almost everyone.
For blacks and the defenders of blacks to take special offense simply when Don Imus verbally attacks a group of black women is both sexist and racist in and of itself.
This is considering that he attacks other groups of people all the time on a regular basis. Where's the outrage when Don Imus goes after others? Are blacks special compared to other groups? They must be if there is only outrage when Don Imus ridicules them.
Why not heap abuse on Don Imus when he attacks and ridicules other groups of people? He does this all the time. It's why I don't listen to him and neither should you.
If we are to have freedom of speech, Don Imus should not be fired.
If everyone simply changes stations when he comes on, his show will go off the air. This is what I recommend.

I either listen to Don Imus on the radio or watch him on the television everyday. I know for a fact that he is not a racist.
He has supported Black candidates for political office and has donated money to Black churches here in the United States.
I've learned so much from his show such as the seriousness of Autism, the plight of children with Cancer, the in and outs of politics and the world of country music.
I am very disappointed at what he said and will always look at him differently from now on.
I don't think he should be fired for his remarks, but I think he should learn from this mistake and realize that he offended a lot of people, both Black and White.

I've only watched/listened to him a few times, certainly not enough to be termed a regular listener. According to sports journalist Michael Wilbon, himself an African-American, Imus makes remarks like this with some regularity.

an apology doesn't cover that.

While they were rough looking ladies, so what? I've seen some rough looking girls at Duke? Don Imus is considered somewhat of a shock jock, so he may get away with this. It doesn't make it right, but since his ratings have gone up, I don't think he'll be punished too severely. This might bring about a boycot of MSNBC though, since it airs his radio show. I don't know, but it was a stupid, insensitive, and untrue thing to say.

I agree.I hope most of his fans feel the same way because that's the only way he will leave the airways.Maybe if all of his sponsors leave too. One can only hope.
