These 300 Spartans who battled the Persians was a true story. But I'n sure there were not a million Persians then, historical data would point that there were probably 10,000 to 20,000 soldiers who fought against the 300 Spartans. The 300 Spartans also had some 700 other soldiers who helped them but were not from Sparta.

I remember from school that it was about 10,000 Persians. And they were joined by about 1000 Thebians (give or take) who did not run away when they though the battle was lost. When I heard the line in the Last Samurai when the Tom Cruise character talk about 300 vs a million, I thought, Hmmm, did historians revise the numbers?" But after seeing this movie, I am wondering if the writers of the Last Samurai got their figure from the graphic novel rather than from scholarly resources.

no, not possible. but 300 is an absolutely terrific movie. the attitude, the valour the spartans display send a chill down my spine. so much to keep their honour. they challenged and even demured a person who projected himself as god. i think they were bogged down by the wrong priests who just had no respect for these warriors. my personal favorite line in the movie when the king says : SPARTANS NEVER RETREAT!!!!!!!!!!. the greatest sequence when the king as a young lad fights the beast and also , when he kicks the intruder into the well..

300, Frank Miller's graphic novel turned cinematic dynamo, is a blood-red splash of awesome visuals, deliciously rendered quasi-history, and a compelling look at how features of character and plot not overly fleshed out in dialogue can be expressed through theatrical use of symbolism, i.e. Sparta's legion of abs and the Godking Xerxes' inhuman height. Through emphasis on setting and physical features, how does this film let you relate to its story and players, and furthermore, how do superficial details represent unexplored character traits in us and our contemporary surroundings?

300 against a million isn't all that far fetched. If you consider the fact that the invaders didn't know the terrain and the Spartans had the brains to lure their foes to the narrow path where the enemy's numbers were negated...and also that the Spartans were fierce warriors of the highest caliber, then 300 against a million IS possible.

who said it was a million!! its immpossible. It was about 10000 and thats possible..because persians won the battle an not all 10000 were killed...some 2000 would have been killed..the central idea of movie and the real battle is that they did not surrendered...and not the numbers. They did not surrender was the basic line of movie and thats what exactly happened in real battle of thoediphile..isnt it?

300 is based on the Battle of Thermopylae, which is one of the famous battles that we studied in our world history class. Of course the movie embellished a little but it was a more or less accurate representation of that battle.
For more information on this, here's a link from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae
