Firefighters rescuing cats or animals from trees.

I was wondering is this just a myth or do firefighters actually help get cats and other animals from trees? I heard on the radio yesterday that this is just a myth. They said that there was a guy and his pet bird that got stuck 60 feet up in a pine tree and they had to call the Coast Guard to rescue them. The guy spent over $1000 for this bird. This seemed weird to me hearing this since birds fly so the bird could have gotten him or herself out of the tree. Are there birds that do not fly? Would you climb 60 feet up a tree to save your bird or pet?

In our area they will help you if you call them to help you out . I have also seen on t.v different shows that are actual facts where they are helping out animals in need . In our area this is all free and volunteer as they don't get paid for what they do as we are a small area but I have seen on different shows on t.v where this is there job and they will rush out to help an animal in need if you call for someone . Maybe it depends on the area you are from and they are all different in all area's .

I think that you may be right about it could depend on the area that you live in as I remember seeing a report where the firefighters got a bear down from a tree not too long ago. I have not heard about a cat or any other type of animal. Some animals may refuse to come down.

yes, that was the same bear that i saw on the news. It was a team effort to get the bear down. Glad that they got the bear down safely.

Actually, I read about this the other day here on myLot in the news section. http://www.mylot.com/w/newsarticle/142808.aspx The fire department was actually called to help him down...but they could not back their truck in close enough. That is why the Coast Guard had to help. But yes, the fire department DOES really help because there have been many of pet rescue shows on TV...namely Animal Planet...that has shown the Fire Dept rescuing someone's beloved pet.

Yeah, I've seen quick news updates on stories like that. I would want any and all help I could get if my dog were trapped, but still, I wonder, isn't there a better way that doesn't use tax payer money?

I did not see the news article about situations like this one. That is good that they are willing and able to help when possible. Here locally, it seems every time I pass a fire station all their vehicles are there so I think they would help here as well if it were to happen. I always thought the Coast Guard dealt with water issues.

I guess I may find out eventually if this is true or not since my brothers cat seems to love climbing up things, especially in the house. I am not sure what they do here to rescue pets in the tree.

I could not imagine the Fire Brigade responding to a call to rescue a cat stuck in a tree. Their time is very valuable and they need to be available for more serious events than that. Could you imagine what fun the newspapers would have if the Fire Brigade was out rescuing a pet while a major office building burned? As for birds that do not fly, there are many types from emus to penguins, and many that can fly have limited ability if they are kept in captivity for all their life. Nevertheless, if the bird could not fly then it must be a very good climber to end up 60 feet up in a tree.

I could see them coming to the rescue but only if there were no fires to go put out and if one did happen during the rescue, they would have to leave. If an animal can get up a tree, they should be able to get back down. I think most people would try to get their pet down by themselves or by someone they know first.

Maybe this was an April fools day joke. Why would the coast guard come? The coast guard helps rescues on the water. Anyway I think whether or not the fire department comes depends on where you live. I have seen an item on TV just recently where a cat fell out of a window and impaled itself on a spike on top of an iron fence. The fire department came and used the jaws of life to cut the spike. The ownder then took the cat to the vet, the spike was still stuck in the cat. I hope the poor creature made it.

It definitely was not an April Fools joke. I had never heard of the Coast Guard to come to the rescue of a pet in a tree. It does seem that it depends on where you live if the fire department comes out to help.

It is indeed a myth that firefighters will come to your house to get your cat out of a tree. I know this for a fact because I had a cat that got stuck up a tree in my front yard. She was so scared to come down that I called the fire department and they said they don't come out for cats stuck in trees. Eventually she came down on her own. Think about how much it would cost taxpayers to get cats out of trees.

It does make sense for a cat to be able to get down from a tree if it was able to get up one to begin with. What would you have done if your cat did not want to come down from the tree? Would you have gone up yourself or gotten someone to help get it down?

The bird might have had it's wings clipped, and could not fly well. Yes, firefighters do save animals, that is the truth, not a myth. Also, yes, I would do anything to save an animal of any kind, mine or someone elses, if it was physically something I could do, I would most certainly do it to save it.

You could probably pay them for this service if it was not a service they actually did. The fire department is there for emergency services and not to rescue a cat in a tree. But, if you offered to pay for the service it would help the funding of the department.

I would do anything I had to do to save my pet but that would probably involve making my boyfriend go up the tree after it.lol. But he would do it as he likes the little critters just as much as I do, he just won't admit it.lol. I don't know if the fireman around here would help out in something like that. I have a police scanner and I have never heard of a call like that. But I have seen some animal rescues on the animal planet, so there are some that will do it.

Now, I was in a small town once, for a visit, and a man's daughter's cat was stuck in this really tall tree down the street where I was. The fire department indeed came to get the cat out of the tree, but I don't think this is a normal occurrence. They have several animal organizations that will come help you out if you live in bigger cities.

Yes ! I love my pets and I love animals..They prove to be better companions than humans..They can listen to u without any objection, they will not betray u nor will they restrict u..They will take with great pleasure what ever u serve them..Actually , its a matter of personal interest and ur love for ur pets..and love is always strong, may it be for humans or for any other thing..Sometimes, people just go crazy for non-living things , then pets have got life and moreover they stay with u and share ur home too..

This topic caught my eye. In some areas firefighters really help in saving your pet in the tree. In the old days cat saving via firefaighters is common but nowadays i think it is not neccesary. I will climb 60 feet if my pet (a RAT) climb a tree. LOL.

i think its just a mith too because here in lasvegas nevada my parrot got stuck in a tree i called 311 and asked but they assumed i was prank calling. they didnt help me but i was able to recover my bird. and i climbed 40 ft to get him. i would risk my life for anything that is helpless. and ya my bird could fly but not realy long. he got himself up their because he flew from branch to branch and he would probibaly fly off the top and lose breath and stop flapping half way to the ground then fall and kill himself by breaking his neck.
