Why do people go on reality TV?

This has been bothering me for a while. Obviously, the whole point of reality TV is to entertain viewer by making participants look like imbeciles. This goes for everything from Jerry Springer and Dr. Phil to Survivor, in my opinion. Recently, though, my girlfriend got me hooked on "I Love New York" and "The Flava of Love." I'm watching these shows and it truly seems as if the whole purpose of the program is to make blacks look as bad as possible. They go out of their way to reward participants for showing the most racially stereotypical and demeaning behavior possible. Why do people do this? Having watched these shows and seen that no one ever walks away looking like anything other than a pathetic loser, why do people sign up for them?

Even if they get paid, how much is one's dignity worth? What's the going rate for reinforcing racial stereotypes? No, I've never understood why people do those shows, or even why those shows exist in the first place. Apparently the public just likes to sit around watching other people act like idiots. It just holds no appeal to me whatsoever to have the idea that the human race is decaying reinforced right there before my eyes. It's just sad.

Oh, I love watching them. I just can't imagine being on one. And I've done some amazingly stupid things in my life. I just tried to make sure no one filmed them.

Becuase they get paid. They all get paid, Jerry Springer pays, all those judge shows pay, Survivor pays some, even if you don't win. So some people just don't care how they look, they are just out for making a buck.

Is that really enough reason, though? The per diem for talk shows is hardly worth selling your self respect. Maybe something like Survivor or I Love New York pays more, but how can people rationalize trading never being taken seriously again for a few grand? Boston from I Love New York is the best example I've seen. Does he really think accounting firms are going to give him a fair job interview after his performance? Does Blind Date pay enough for being named sluttiest chick of the week to justify being known as sluttiest chick on Blind Date?
