There are going to be summer olympics held in China very soon. When I think of China the first thing that comes to my mind is Tienamen Square and the human rights violations that happened there. Do you think they have changed? If there was a demonstration today would they react the same way?

i am a chinese , mm, i think democray have progressed in china but still not so satisfied . ., i think if there was a demonstration, goverment ould not react the same way. in face ,i think any chinese want to live safely or have his or her family in trouble as well would never go on demonstration that show disaghreement . the right for citizens to express their idea free is not pratical in chia . well, if the demonstration is about America ;s invasion in iraq, or japan;s prime minister visit some evil temple . the goverment will welcome .

Unfortunately, this confirms what I have been worried about. The idea that so many people are unable to express their true feelings and have to suppress their opinions makes me sad. The country that literally was the first to break free from the dark ages seems to want to return there. We heard that many people were displaced and sent to live far from their homes just to make room for the olympic village. Is this something you know anything about?

Yes, China has done something about their human rights abuses. They have learned to cover it up better. They have learned to teach their people they had better not talk about it. They have learned to lie about it really well. If there was a freedom demonstration today they would not react the same way. It would probably be worse, but undoubtly western jounalists would be unable to get the story.

I have to agree with you and the man who answered under you seems to have confirmed this. Although I don't think that anyone will miss my participation in the least, I am strongly temped to boycott the summer olympics and not watch any of the events or give money to the athletes who will compete.
