Talk about a close call!!!

When I was driving home today I got up to a stoplight that was red. It was a 6 lane road, 3 for each side. Everyone on the side I was on that had stopped was in the left lane, so the middle and right lanes were clear. The light was still red when all of a sudden an older (80's?) green Mercedes went through the red light from the right lane full speed (at least 50 mph)...while traffic of the opposite side were making a left turn (from their side). The guy in the green Mercedes swerved HARD to avoid the cars that had the right-of-way and somehow he succeed in missing any of the cars! I remember yelling out OH MY GOD, NO! as it was taking place and I was amazed this nut didn't cause an accident. I saw him look out his window as he had stopped on the other side of the intersection and yelled something (possibly sorry). He looked about my age (in his 30's), so all I can think of that caused him to drive so dangerously was that he 1) he didn't see that the light was red 2) he was drunk 3) he was high or 4) possibly had a pregnant lady in the car and she was giving birth, which freaked him out and made him drive like a mad man. Have you ever seen such a close call? Or have you been involved in one? What do you think of the guy I mentioned?

I've had a few close calls with my partner before now. It's scary for sure. I sometimes wonder how some people ever got their drivers license because the complete stupidity they display behind the wheel of their vehicles is nothing short of astounding! I am glad that you weren't hit or hurt though. That's a relief. From the way you describe this guy yelling it makes me think he had to have been drunk or high. There's no way that anyone couldn't have seen that the light was red. He's very lucky!

I can only assume that these drivers never obtained a drivers license and are driving on the streets illegally. :( Scary enough there IS a way to not see a stoplight's color. If the sun's light hits the stoplight at just the right angle it is difficult to determine the color of the light as all three colors fade. I know, as this has happened to me. But this was NOT one of those times. :( I'm just glad everyone, including myself and youngest son, were not involved in an accident that day.

I had a close call 3 days after getting my license! I was driving in a 2 door honda civic, from nebraska to florida. I was in missouri, and on the big interstate, and I was in the far right lane, and there wasn't any room for me to get over for merging traffic. So a dump truck barreling down the on ramp, didn't yeild and was coming right into my lane, so I sped up to try and get in front of the car in the middle lane, I went as fast as I could, and pulled in front of him to avoid the crash with the dump truck. I had enough clearance to get in front of the cavalier in the middle and then i pulled off on the shoulder on the left. , but i guess it freaked him out and he thought i was going to hit him, so he swerved to the left, (thankfully no one was there) and he ended up whipping his wheel around again, and he was going across the lanes of traffic, totally out of control. He ended up hitting a piece of construction equipment on the shoulder on the right, with the rear of his car. So the cops came, and he kept telling the cops it was all my fault and I came into his lane for no reason. Luckily for me the truck driver that was behind me in the right lane stopped as well, and told them it wasnt my fault and the cops didn't cite me for anything, my car wasn't scratched and I made out okay. Later his insurance was trying to sue me for the damage to his car, the cavalier, which was apparently totaled. I kept referring them to my insurance, which was given at the time of the accident. And I secured a copy of the police report which stated i was not at fault and the cavalier guy over-corrected. However for whatever reason my insurance still paid and put it under me as an "at fault" accident, grr. Well that was my close call, very scary! Now I don't like to drive too much.

Wow, how scary for you! I personally had one about 3 years back where I got onto a freeway on-ramp at night and it was pretty heavy with traffic, though not bumper to bumper. I had to merge as my lane was ending...and there was a big motor-home, by what I could see, that was hauling @$$ in the right lane when he could have been courteous, slowed down somewhat (as he shouldn't have been speeding in the first place) and let me in (I do this for others, especially on the freeway). I had no choice as to pull my car over to the shoulder to avoid an accident. Needless to say I don't drive on the freeway as often now, and I definitely don't drive it at night! Sorry to hear that you were blamed for the accident.

Unfortunately for me, my 'close' call wasn't close, it was an impact! I was a front seat passenger, seat belted, in a car that had the right of way A car came from the left, against the red light, right into the path the vehicle I was in was taking I know I closed my eyes as I saw it coming, and I remember thinking that we hit so much harder than I had thought it would be at the speed we were going All of us went to the hospital by ambulance, no broken bones, but lots of soft tissue bruises From that time in 1997 to this date I have had differing amounts of pain in my sciatic nerve, also both knees have severe arthritis due to the wrenching, twisting impact

I just came back to check out all the stories of our close calls--- all have just convinced me more than ever that we must drive defensively, as if each and every other driver out there is nuts!

I've seen a few close calls like this. One time it was almost me that was hit. When things like this happens it's like you're seeing it in slow motion and there's nothing you can do to stop it. It's the scariest thing in the world. I'm always so paranoid of something happening when my daughter is in the car. I would totally flip out if I ever got in a wreck with my daughter.

I've also had a close call where I was almost hit (not today's incident). I was in poll position when my light turned green. I started to go and the car on the left ran the red light. I am assuming he tried to make the yellow light. Fortunately we both stopped in time. I honked my horn and mouthed cuss words at him for being foolish. I saw that it was an old man. He looked at me all scared. I ended up driving away, still a bit pissed, but as there wasn't an accident there was no need to stay. I too worry about being in a car accident while my children are in the truck with me. But I try not to think about it as I wouldn't want to drive if I thought about it all the time.

that was really a very close call!!!i think the guy you saw at the traffic light had got demented, for what he did that, maybe i think that somone could tell by his face expressions at the time he yelled sorry.if the reason was worth then i think he had to do it.well i had seen a similar case at the traffic light but i dont remember it clearly as it happened long time back.coming back to this guy,i think if he was drunk, then there should have been cops there to arrest him.he dint see the red light cant be possible so maybe i think any other reason that could have been with him was that he might be getting late.anywayz whatever maybe the reason he must be careful from the next time.

There are times when a driver cannot see a red light. When the sun is in a certain position during the day, it reflects off of the stoplight making it difficult to determine what color the light actually is, especially with these newer stoplights that have been installed a few years back. I've had this happen to me as I was approaching an intersection. As I couldn't tell what color it was I slowed down as I didn't want to run a red light. Apparently it was green as other cars around me went through, though slowly. But this was not the case with the man in the green Mercedes. The sun had already been setting and it was easy to see that the light had been red. Too bad there hadn't been a cop there to pull this guy over and see what the man's reason was. Hopefully he has learned a valuable lesson and won't run a red again.
