Visa or MasterCard seem to be accepted just about anywhere; Discover is not accepted by some merchants. We carry all three just in case.
Beyond that, if you routinely carry a balance, go for the lowest interest rate. If you always pay your balance in full each month, the interest rate doesn't matter so much (but you need to pay up in full and on time every single month or you'll get hit with exorbitant interest charges). Some people like cards that give them "points" or "miles" or some other kind of reward for using the card. If you are one of them, go for a card that rewards something that you value, such as frequent flyer miles or rebate points. Some of them give you cash-back; others allow you to cash in points for gift certificates. Another factor that may influence your choice is the length of time between billing and payment due date. Some cards don't give you much time. Also, pay attention to the interest rate charged on cash advances if you use this feature. Some cards allow you to get separate account numbers for each online purchase (a security feature so you aren't using your CC# on the internet). Some cards may charge an annual fee of some sort. Unless the card has lots of extra features that you value, it is usually not wise (or necessary) to have to pay a fee to carry a credit card.
