My Jack Russell Terrier, acting all innocent all the time, killed a baby squirrel. The squirrel came up to the fence, I am assuming just to say hi to my dog. My girl was a wagging her tail and acting all friendly like towards this little thing. The squirrel, for some reason unknown to me (maybe my dog told her to come over) squeezed through the fence and BAM!, my dog put the death grip around it's neck and killed it. Then she proceeded to place her front paw on this creature and claim victory. She was so proud of her kill. YUCK!! I had to put on a pair of thick gloves, pick up the dead squirrel and walk back to the woods behind my house to "bury" it. All the while, I was looking around for this little squirrel's family, watching my back so they wouldn't jump me. My girl kept barking, as if to say, "Hey, bring me back my toy! It's mine, I tell ya!"
I suppose she was just doing what comes naturally. She is a little hunter girl. It just seemed so unfair to trick this poor thing to it's death.

that is really sad! I would be so upset if my dog killed an animal. Did she do it in front of you? Thats so awful! But you cant blame her too much =/ Dogs were hunters before they were pets.
And your dog is very cute! :)

I saw the squirrel come up to the fence, got busy with something in the yard, then looked to see it come through the fence and saw what my dog did. By the time I got there, it was too late.
I told her you said she was cute. She sighed, as if to say "I know." Little dickens!!

LOL! I hope I boosted her self esteem a little ;P I have pictures of my dogs on my photos if you want to check them out. My golden retriever never killed anything, and never will(she's scared of everything, she was scared of a puppy lab)! hehe.

animal is always be one no matter how you trained it..the squirrel is for them a prey to catch and eat if given the chance..its like your pet the predator since the prey is small its how in the animal world of life is..

Ahhh Its sad about the squirrel. But your little lady was only doing what is her nature to do. I have a Jack Russell and your pretty little lady looks just like mine. Other than their hunting instincts they are just sweethearts. My Girl is going on 10 years old. We have had her since she was 6 weeks old. You sound like you adore your angel as much as we love ours. Forgive her mom :)))

Hi there, your dog is not a murderer. She is following her instincts. Jack Russell Terriers are natural hunters. She just did what comes naturally...as you have said. And her barking is quite natural too, Jack Russell Terriers are very vocal animals! Take care of her,she is doing her job!

In our neighborhood, we have a neighbor who breeds squirrels in his attic because he will not fix the hole in his siding on his house. As you probably know, these creatures are related to the rat family. I hate how destructive they are to our homes, and when my dog trees one of them we try to kill it. My dog chases them from our yard, and I have constantly complained to the city about our neighbor, but it does not seem to do any good. If you like squirrels, maybe I can send you some from our neighborhood. Let me know how many squirrels and rats you want, and I will send some your way.

I have enough squirrels in my neighborhood, but thanks fo the offer.
No rats either, even though, when I lived in New York, she did catch one. She didn't kill it but she put her paws on it so it couldn't move. She let me take care of it. Lucky me!!

I would feel much worse if she did kill a bunny, also. I know squirrels are nasty, but it was just a baby. There used to be squirrels in a tree near another house I lived in that used to sound like they were laughing at my cats when they were outside. My cats would get so mad! LOL

Sorry to hear that but its not a big issue as animals don't think like the way we think or like the way we are organized. Your angel just don't know that it hurts other to kill that poor creature. Anyway dogs can understand our emotions tell her that its not good to kill those poor creatures scold her when she is barking at the squirrel when you were about to bury, so that she will know that in the future she won't do.

LOL I'm sorry this is not funny at all but I can't help but laugh! I think it's the way you've worded this short story is what I find humorous! Your puppy's a little fart but she WAS just doing what she was probably meant to do (not kill, but hunt!) LOL Poor little baby squirrel! At least you went and buried it respectfully!

Jack Russell's are bred to hunt vermin. A squirrel being a small fast moving rodent falls directly under that. She doesn't view it as unfair, she views it as her job. :)

Dogs are conniving. Dogs with hunting blood in them do this. They trick and track and connive their prey and then they pounce! I know, my dog is a Japanese Shiba Inu. They were trained to hunt small prey. It is embedded in their genes I guess! My daughter had a gerbil and my dog would watch it incessantly. He finally found his opportunity one night and somehow opened the cage and attacked. He killed my daughters gerbil and I ended up having to break the news to my daughter. It broke her heart, but she knows that small animals are not a good choice in our home with our dog present. He used to go on hikes and if a squirrel would come by he would try to attack. He did succeed once when my brother took him hiking and it wasn't pretty. They can be ferocious! LOL

I think it is her nature. terrier dogs really do that. we can't blame them for that. she is still an angel.
i remember a story relating to this.
once there is a monk who walked on the side of the river. he saw a scorpion who is trying to climb and get out from the water. the monk, efter seeing it, offered some help to the scorpion.
First attempt, it stinged him. still, the scorpion is not safe, until the monk tried and tried and tried and then a man saw his deed. the man said "are you crazy? scorpions are poisonous, you should know that, you can die!"
the monk just replied "it is their nature. we can't blame them. i have to help it. it needs help."
so don't worry for the crime like deed of your dear dog my friend, she did not do it to be seen as a murderer by her own master right? i think she thinks that above all people, her master is the one who can understand her.
yes it is a not good deed to kill a creature but we can't do anything, it's their nature. God bless and i hope this helps! :)

it's rude for us but we must consider that dogs have the animal instinct as predators. they hunt for survival and preserving one of it's kind. dogs can be the top of the food chain. it's just a balance of nature. one has to die in order to control overpopulation.

Yeah well, I was glad she didn't tear the stuffing out of it, like she does with all the stuffed animals I give her.
My backyard is huge and I just couldn't get to her in time. Don't think I do not feel bad this happened. I do. I think she does too, because I was a little angry and yelled at her a little.
