Hi, Sweetjessa. The best sushi does not smell like fish. It's sweet, that's the rice, it's salty, that the soy sauce, and it's cool - that's the tuna (an easy fish to start with). Take a small bit first, and push it around with your tounge. Really good sushi does not require forced chomping or chewing! If there is a seaweed wrapper, this is the only thing that may need to be chewed through. Squish the rice and tuna against the soft palate of your mouth (the roof) and enjoy the texture. This is the seductive side of sushi - it's all about texture. Eventually, you will get to know different grades of tuna, from fatty to very lean. When I started out I liked fatty tuna, but now I like it red and very very lean. My favorite food-feeling is the texture of lean tuna being squished against the roof of my mouth. That, and really good (strong) kimchi, which is another acquired taste! Take it slow the first time that you get sushi, and eat small bites first. If you take the time to enjoy it, you will discover its treasures.

Wow now i'm craving sushi like mad!!!!! Also for a heads up, another great sushi to start w/ is eel. It's a non-raw fish, and so that whole mindset of eating something raw isn't there. The best eel ones are w/ avacado, mmmm really amazing. Then after many plates/rolls of eel try some of the others, really good. Just make sure not to go to a bad sushi place. I did for my first time, almost never ate sushi again, yet luckily I retried it and (even though it still wasn't well made) loved it. Became my favorite food, and whenever I get a chance to eat some, I shoot for it. :D

Good fresh sushi or sashimi (without the rice) is light and almost melts in your mouth. Hamachi (yellowtail) has a buttery flavor, maguro (tuna) is cool and has a subtle but rich flavor. Unagi (sea eel) is grilled and is my personal favorite and again it is a light flavor that beats something like teryaki chicken hands down. You can also try the sushi rolls that have veggies or crab or ebi (shrimp). I like eating sushi because, even if I eat until I'm stuffed, it always feels light - not like a big mac that sits in your stomach and weighs down your energy for hours.

Ohhhh, I'm with you, dld999!!! I tried grilled eel about four years ago, and it's my absolute favorite now after tuna. Oh, I've been craving it for sooo long! Guess I'll have to take a trip into the city to get it... And while I'm there, I'll get my Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup, and my Mongolian Curry Chicken Noodle Soup, too! (Might as well make it a big trip, and bring home a few day's worth, eh?) :)

It tastes like the best food in the whole world! The sweet sticky rice is mixed with all different kinds of textures and tastes depending on what type you get. Every kind I have had is so delicious. Not all sushi is raw, though. There are many kinds that include cooked fish and also types that only have vegetables. If you're nervous, you should start with simple california rolls that are easy to find all over the place, even at the grocery store! They're very yummy and make a good lunch or snack, and come as a side dish at a lot of sushi restaurants.
