Vegetarians?

I just wondered how many of us are vegetarians? And if you are one, do you do this on your own? Or does your family practice vegetarianism as well? Do you encourage your kids to refrain from eating meat? Just curious...

I became vegetarian when I was a young child. When my first son was born I decided to bring him up a vegetarian. He is now 12 years old and I only give him vegetarian meals. I later became a vegan, gradually over a period of time. My second son is just three months old. I wanted to bring him up vegan. However he spent three weeks in hospital at the beginning of his life and in addition to the natural mother's milk I gave him he also had formula milk. He has spina bifida you see. So he is currently vegetarian and hopefully he will be vegan when he is older. But I will give him the chance to choose his diet when he is more mature.

My son is still is a baby, but since my husband is not a vegetarian he will likely have some meat. My husband rarely eats red meat though. We will likely take him to farm and let him know the process and let him make his own decision.

My mom is a vegetarian, and besides no longer consuming all of the chemicals, hormones, growth enhancrs, and other additives she lost over two undred lbs. 15 or so years ago she called me crazy for giving up meat - but cooked two meals -now she's like a born again christian - forever preaching the benefits of vegetarianism. Comments like, "Do you know what you're putting in your system? " Are not unusual. Although I wouldn't employ the same tactics it is true - do you know those who get colonics get rid of meat that's been in their system for years and years. Yuck.

I know that fruits and vegetables can do wonders to our health. But I do not see the point of cutting altogether fish, meat, milk and cheese from my diet. Instead what I do is, raise my consumption of vegetables and fruits as the doctor has recommended. I have shared this idea to my children. If they choose to become pure vegetarians, I do not see anything wrong with that. If they decide to become purely meat-eating, something must be done about it.
